Mulboyne quotes Simon Schama, and now Ian Buruma. He seems to have a thing for writers who peaked in the Hamanaka/Leeson era but have long since entered their decadent phases. I stopped giving a shite about anything Buruma had to say when he attacked Hirsaan Ali for advocating "enlightenment fundamentalism," an absurd oxymoron if ever there was one.

I think I saw him at the Yoyogi park dog run last weekend. There was a big, hulking gaijin wearing a miniskirt and a blond wig with one of his big legs perched on a bench, chatting with a little Japanese man. If I'd known for sure it was him, I would've said, "Bill, you've got showgirl legs! When's the op? BTW, loved Poor People."
