The problem is that there is already almost no room for originality. Every single fields were already depleted by preceding industrialized countries, mainly Western ones. So if you make something, inevitably and automatically it becomes "This part looks like that. That part is similar to this... blah blah blah...".

And in my personal view, non-monotheistic people like Japanese, Korean and Chinese can grasp things almost only by comparing others. In other words, they have no mental methods to transcend comparison.

Well, blaming penis shortness and copy catness of Japanese and other Asian is a usual measure for driven-to-the-wall Western dudes, though.

You really need a new word to abuse.

How is the West driven to the wall? Japan has lost its edge in almost every field it once stood proud in. I'll concede you still lead the way when it comes to burying your heads in the sand and true, your hypocrisy is second to none, but that's all you've got Take. That and one hell of a bleak, dark future. Sorry, mate.

A thoughtful response! Thank you Take.

But I can see two problems:

1) If you think about this a bit more it starts to sound like an excuse. Important innovations are still happening all around the world, and there's even plenty of room for fundamental research that serves as the basis for other advances. In fact, the world needs new ideas and technologies now more than ever. To say "there is already almost no room for originality" is like saying that everything has already been invented or thought of, which is a good excuse for not trying. There are still huge holes that need to be filled, and those holes will be filled by people who are prepared to think and work hard enough.

2) Whether there's room for originality or not, claiming an existing idea or someone else's work as your own is not only wrong, it is the antithesis of the kind of thinking that is required for real innovation. It doesn't set the kind of example that might inspire young people to become innovators.

I'm not quite sure how monotheism comes into this, but it's an interesting thought. Admittedly, monotheism and polytheism (or a lack of any kind of "theism") do result in different types of social interaction and individuality, and that might have some effect on creative ability, but I'm going to have to think about this some more.

I'll just assume you were trying to be funny and ignore this bit. The other stuff actually made me think.

I spotted this on craigslist tokyo today.....

Library Research Work (Tokyo main library)
I need a person who is bilingual and can search thru the archives of a few Japanese newspapers from 1937 to 1944.

I am looking for a specific Chinese cartoon character that was plagirised in the Japanese newspaper during the Sino-Japanese war, we are not sure which newspaper but we have images of the cartoon character and we have documented oral evidence of its existence. We are not sure how long this project will last.

Maybe step one is to list all newspapers that are archived but we can discuss specifics via email.

If you have interest, please email me on singaporecarolyn@yahoo.com

This is interesting. I wonder what the purpose of finding a cartoon character that was plagiarized in 1937-1944 might be? Probably not to sue after all these years. More likely to make some kind of point (i.e. "see, the Japanese did it too!"). Of course it could be something deeper ... some kind of sociological research ... I am intrigued.

This is something that has always mystified me. The man has obviously made a lot of money in his time (he claims that his current office/home cost about 300 million JPY to build, which is probably true), yet he doesn't actually seem to be productive in any way.

So he's a non-practicing entity, which is just a nice way of saying "parasite."

Your comment on patent trolling piqued my interest, so I did a little research and was rather shocked at some of the tactics these types use to extort money out of corporations on essentially non-meritorious claims. Not a nice business at all. But I learned something new, so thanks for the heads-up!
