Facebook is finding it tough going in Japan, with strong competition from local social networks, so you'd think they would be especially attentive to any Japanese celebrities who signed up. The band X Japan did just that a couple of months ago, ahead of some gigs in America, reasoning that Facebook would be a good way of communicating with their fans outside Japan. When they started their own page, the band's management noticed there were already some unofficial pages up and asked Facebook to verify their account while getting rid of the others. Facebook responded last week by getting rid of all the pages, including the one the band had been carefully cultivating. It has not yet been restored. Band member Yoshiki sent out a tweet, which future historians may come to see as encapsulating the Zeitgeist of 2010:
Just came back from H Kitty party. People asked me about Xjapan's facebook. They didn't think ours was official so they shut it down. Help!
You'll be happy to know that Yoshiki's own Facebook page is still available.
