...With images from Japan's devastation continuing to circle news outlets, an elegant documentary about sushi might seem too lighthearted or distastefully untimely. But au contraire. At this year's Tribeca Film Festival, David Gelb's "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" served film-goers with a fresh reminder of the deeply rooted traditions that make the island country so resilient. Gelb's debut film, which was the first film of the festival to be snapped up - by Magnolia Pictures - just one day before its North American debut on April 22, is a celebration of just one of many of Japan's iconic institutions: sushi-making. "Jiro" follows 85-year-old master sushi chef Jiro Ono's admirable rise to prominence as one of the country's top culinary masters. The octogenarian, who has no plans of quitting his craft anytime soon (his two sons are in line to take over the Sukiyabashi Jiro restaurant when he passes), serves as the central focus of the film, with an entire cast of eccentric supporting characters behind him. The film, shot with glossy cuts of sashimi abound, expertly details the tedium and process involved in Jiro's rise from humble beginnings to conducting a beautifully orchestrated three-Michelin star restaurant, now the gold standard for all subsequent sushi restaurants...more...
