What we need is a good Y.B.F. documentary

Movies, TV, music, anime other random J-pop culture phenomenons. Also film/video production, technical discussion, cast and crew calls, etc.

The clueless on another forum* are arguing about a Wall Street Journal review about validity of YBF...

WSJ..."Seeking Asian Female," Debbie Lum's documentary about white guys romantically fixated on Asian women---specifically, one white guy, and his quest to marry the Asian lady of his dreams. The film debuted this week at the annual SXSW festival in Austin, and follows the story of Steven, "a 60-year-old, twice-divorced white male with an uncanny resemblance to Aussie actor Geoffrey Rush and a case of yellow fever bordering on the terminal." ..more...

I love Senor Coconut....

As to YBF, the same kind of documentary could be made about men o [insert color here] liking women of [insert color here] and I think there are quite a lot more interesting combinations than white sea bass chasing yellowtail. I'd totally watch a documentary on Asian men who have a thing for black womens. :D

great.... a sometimes true stereotype thats socially acceptable to milk into a film.

this shit is as embarrassing as the fat red aussies with 12 year olds on their arms seen around bankok. oh well, its the world we live in, i guess.

feels racist in a way... just in a way thats not out of bounds

I'm going to be bastard and say she's not the prettiest girl around, and the majority of white fellas she met were keen on her for such reasons.

I could be way off the mark - but just an idea.
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

I think lots of people will watch it to reassure themselves that there are comparatively more tragic folk out there. Always nice to know you are not the worst or the saddest one out there. :p

This documentary is getting some coverage as it is about to be screened on PBS.

Trailer and clips here.

Here is a link to an interesting video in this same series. The whole series gives plenty of food for thought. Go on waste some time here.

For good times, make it Suntory. I am so bummed I had the chance to be in that movie, but I blew it. Long story. Maybe I'll write a book someday about all my missed opportunities while living in Tokyo.
