In 2013, Kikuchi starred alongside Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba in Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film in general and Kikuchi's performance in particular were well-received by critics.

I haven't seen the movie but Rinko Kikuchi is Japanese. She played the deaf chick in "Babel".

Yeah, I know...but she's not hot and apparently can't deliver lines in Japanese for even Japan's low standards. I don't know how to describe it other than it sounded soooo unnatural. (and like I mentioned above, they didn't even use her to dub the movie in Japanese)

Gotcha. My guess is they didn't use her in the dub because she had prior commitment to another project or she was too expensive not because of her Japanese ability. Also, I just Googled it and they used a voice actress from "Evangelion" so maybe it was for marketing purposes.
I don't think she's hot either but people in the US including those who cast her probably do. Look at Lucy Liu. Everyone in the US thought she was hot but people in Asia were like WTF?
EDIT: Just noticed that Kikuchi's character as a child is played by Mana Ashida. I feel bad for hating a kid this much but that little kvnt is so fucking annoying.

Doubt she'll run into any of her FG critics while she's there cashing her cheque.

Hmm... let's think about that for a second...
"Japanese audiences don't like her there for she's bad."
Not a sound statement.
Samurai_Jerk wrote:That's exactly my point. She's considered hot by people in the West and bankable in Hollywood but that doesn't necessarily mean shit in Japan/Asia.

Did you see "Sucker Punch" they seem to have the same kind of visuals... Loved that movie...
But yea... KR... A sock puppet would do better...

She was nominated for best supporting actress for Babel, which is about as artsy as a Hollywood movie can get. Obviously, that's not her norm, but still.

How is that not a challenging role?
chokonen888 wrote:How much more stereotypical Asian female role can you get than her role in The Brothers Bloom? She probably had all of 5 lines in the entire movie. Even in Babel, was her role that challenging? I liked both movies but it definitely wasn't for her acting. I mean, she's done well for herself financially and whatnot but I think it's mostly because she's willing to take those kinds of easy roles and the western market still eats them up. You guys remember Ziyi Zhang from crouching tiger hidden dragon? She totally dropped off the Hollywood radar and attributes it all the roles she's approached for being exactly the type of stuff RK is taking. (and not being interested in that) Don't get me wrong though, I'd be a whore to whoever paid me more in either of their shoes...just saying that when it comes to these lemur roles, Hollywood could find better. (looking and talented)

I recall reading that she learned sign language to win the part.
It was reported that during the Japanese premiere of the movie, numerous people became sick after watching the scene involving Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi dancing in a club with flashing strobe lights. Since the incident, theaters nationwide posted notices saying that Babel contains scenes with strong effects and that some viewers felt sick after seeing them.

That took some effort...but like many of her other roles, there is a ton of silent looks off into nowhere. I just don't think she's an amazing actress or hot.

As for roles, well, Academy Award winner Ryoko Hirosue [a good actress, btw] is currently acting in a light entertainment J-TV comedy series called "Starman".
Zhang Ziyi is currently acting in art-house films such as "My Lucky Star".
