Pacific rimjob (in flight movie)

Postby Coligny » Tue Aug 20, 2013 11:19 am

Take as much as you can from evangelion without having to pay royalties
Remove anything that was halfway decent from the show (the Alpine Renault 310 for a start)
Take the visual from casshern. Mixed with the overdone clusterfuck of Michael Bay's Tranformers reboot (what the hell is happening, what are all those lights, where is what, what is what... Please take me out of here)
And with a dollars store version of the Ultraman corniest monsters....
Actors that can't act, an asian female even more psychorigid than Maggie Q with less acting will.
Have the actors say 'Kaiju'... a lot...
Establish ruleset for the storyline, shit systematically on them, in the next scene after establishing any of them. Allowing even people who just are there to see cool shit go boom to make that startled dog face...

Or more simply

Write script on toilet paper.
Eat a lot of taco bell
Wipe taco bell's resulting mayhem with the TP and directly make a movie with it before it's even dried.

Started watching... Then saw the End credits thinking that it was some godawfull boring shit... Bad luck I was barely 10 minutes into the wreck watching the starting title...
It's easily the worst piece of shit made, worse than all ScyFy and Asylum prod crap, even if you include the ridiculous asylum "Transmorphers 1". I'm pretty sure an ammoniac enema brings more entertainement.

Hahahaha, I didn't think it was that bad but I too didn't like the monster designs (it's 2013 and that's all they can come up with???) and after all the shit it took from Evangelion and such, thought it was silly they attempted to refeed the appeal to Japan with a Japanese actress and calling the monsters Kaiju. Her Japanese in the movie sounded really forced/read and she has another woman dubbing over her characters voice for the Japanese dubbed version hahaha. (could have totally picked a hotter J-girl to play the character as well but my guess is lack of Eigo ability ruled out most other contenders...though I guess it could have been worse) I didn't hate it but for as much potential as it had, it was disappointing.

I thought she was a chinese character, that's why the scene where she's a little girl in the street felt weird as there was a Nissan Figaro in one of the cars wrecks...

I haven't seen the movie but Rinko Kikuchi is Japanese. She played the deaf chick in "Babel".

She looks more like an asianish version of John McLane's daughter...

In 2013, Kikuchi starred alongside Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba in Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film in general and Kikuchi's performance in particular were well-received by critics.

Yeah, I know...but she's not hot and apparently can't deliver lines in Japanese for even Japan's low standards. I don't know how to describe it other than it sounded soooo unnatural. (and like I mentioned above, they didn't even use her to dub the movie in Japanese)

Gotcha. My guess is they didn't use her in the dub because she had prior commitment to another project or she was too expensive not because of her Japanese ability. Also, I just Googled it and they used a voice actress from "Evangelion" so maybe it was for marketing purposes.

I don't think she's hot either but people in the US including those who cast her probably do. Look at Lucy Liu. Everyone in the US thought she was hot but people in Asia were like WTF?

EDIT: Just noticed that Kikuchi's character as a child is played by Mana Ashida. I feel bad for hating a kid this much but that little kvnt is so fucking annoying.

Hahaha, agreed on all accounts. I think her fucked Japanese has to do with the fact she's speaking to NJ who aren't fluent but that just shows how poor her acting is. Even Jax managed a good 違うって?when speaking back to her.

Looks good to me.

On of the very few J-actresses able to get work overseas.

RK is laughing all the way to the bank.

Doubt she'll run into any of her FG critics while she's there cashing her cheque.

That's exactly my point. She's considered hot by people in the West and bankable in Hollywood but that doesn't necessarily mean shit in Japan/Asia.

More like Japanese audiences would rather have someone else playing the part and that's bad when you consider she was likely put in the movie to appeal to the Japanese audience. This wasn't a Japanese robot movie where lalaland super techno Japan is played up...so they add a tolken Japanese for the J-market to latch on to. As for the US side, look at all the roles she's played in Hollywood. Stereotype much? Yeah, she works for the western market.

Compared to other Japanese who've made a name for themselves in Hollywood, she doesn't work much and isn't as well known. It might be because the Japanese aren't into her or it might be because she chooses not to do the thing take every TV spot and CM offered to her. Of course if she's holding out for projects like "Pacific Rim" and "47 Ronin" she's probably fucking herself out of a lot of money for no good reason. It ain't like she's making art.

Speaking of "47 Ronin", have you seen the trailer. It looks beyond awful.

I didn't see "Sucker Punch" because I heard it was fucking awful.

Keanu ain't the only reason I think "47 Ronin" looks like it'll be a steaming pile of unko but he certainly doesn't help.

SP is a semi surrealist movie, I would put it in the same drawer as naked lunch with a much stronger soundtrack. Most of the time is spend in the reality distortion field of the mind of one girl wrongly interned in an asylum. Check at least the trailers. There is a heavy but hopefully non hipster Steampunk influence.

How much more stereotypical Asian female role can you get than her role in The Brothers Bloom? She probably had all of 5 lines in the entire movie. Even in Babel, was her role that challenging? I liked both movies but it definitely wasn't for her acting. I mean, she's done well for herself financially and whatnot but I think it's mostly because she's willing to take those kinds of easy roles and the western market still eats them up. You guys remember Ziyi Zhang from crouching tiger hidden dragon? She totally dropped off the Hollywood radar and attributes it all the roles she's approached for being exactly the type of stuff RK is taking. (and not being interested in that) Don't get me wrong though, I'd be a whore to whoever paid me more in either of their shoes...just saying that when it comes to these lemur roles, Hollywood could find better. Such as?

As for roles, well, Academy Award winner Ryoko Hirosue [a good actress, btw] is currently acting in a light entertainment J-TV comedy series called "Starman".

Zhang Ziyi is currently acting in art-house films such as

"My Lucky Star".

That took some effort...but like many of her other roles, there is a ton of silent looks off into nowhere. I just don't think she's an amazing actress or hot.

BTW, I couldn't help laughing at this on the Babel page:

It was reported that during the Japanese premiere of the movie, numerous people became sick after watching the scene involving Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi dancing in a club with flashing strobe lights. Since the incident, theaters nationwide posted notices saying that Babel contains scenes with strong effects and that some viewers felt sick after seeing them.

How much you want to bet the only "policework" involved was measuring the distances the sick people were sitting from the movie screen

Ryoko Hirosue would have been far better. Hell, this wasn't a really deep role either, they could have totally gone for a hot actress, regardless of shitty Engrish and talent.

You might not have liked her acting but doing that role well is certainly a challenge.

Academy Award means Oscar unless you qualify it with something else like Japanese.

Zhang Ziyi is currently acting in art-house films such as "My Lucky Star".

Which aren't Hollywood movies which is choko's whole point. You're very good at supporting the opposing side's argument.
