Japanese parents learn special sign language to communicate with young children
NHK News Exchange / 08 May 2003 0956 hrs (SST) 0156 hrs (GMT)
In Japan, more parents are picking up sign language to communicate with their young children.
Since children under the age of two cannot really talk, a special sign language has been developed for them so that they can express their needs and feelings.
.... For example, your baby will learn how to tell you that he is in pain or even when he is cold....opens his closed fists, he is asking for milk.

This is becoming popular for parents in the UK too...

BBC

he method's supporters claim it enables children to communicate earlier, without delaying their speech. In fact, they say, when signing toddlers do begin to talk, they often begin with more complex thoughts than you'd expect.

My sister did this with her son.

It DID delay his speech, only because his mother (my sister) and father are quiet people by nature too. At 3 almost 4, he says some complex ideas.
