Japan is No1 newspaper buying but ...NOT ONE person in my train today was reading a paper, only keitai.

While the Japanese are the world's leading newspaper buyers, China holds the world daily circulation record of 82 million, followed by Japan, India and the United States, a report said.
China held the world circulation record with 82 million newspapers sold daily, followed by Japan with 70.8 million, India with 57.84 million and the United States with 55.18 million.

The man next to me on the train this morning was having a loud and indepth conversation with himself.. I think he was too busy to read the paper.

but I love the paper recycling rack - ie the wire bag rack above the seats. People just dump their papers and others come along and pick them up for a second third or fourth reading.. Save the trees or just cheap skates?

YES! I love the 'paper recycling rack' too since I cannot see me wasting money on the Japanese paper I only half-assed can read. My favorite is the free manga in coin-laundries and ramen shops. It's always a great conversation starter to ask what some obscure/perverted manga means.
