YOU GOT HELMETS!!! I yanked the training wheels off my children's (not toddlers) bike the day I got it on my 7th b-day and had no safety equipment. We were hard! If I fell and didn't break anything, I was alright! And it was pretty much the same progression for me, maybe a bit faster cause I lived in apartment complexes (100+units/7+buildings) that were very like a village in the middle of a city. Lots of families living together and helping each other out. Miss that sort of thing nowadays.

I agree, but seriously times have changed from the good ol' days of "we're a community" I think it sad that kids can't be free, but in terms of letting a teenage loose in the mall of America, with all the creeps in this world to prey upon them, is a bit daring.

I'm not saying lock them up, I am just saying supervise and do the parenting that needs to be done. The mall of America is the largest shopping center in the world, that is no place for a 14 year old to run loose. When I was a child, my parents took me to the malls. Let me loose in the arcade while they waited outside on the bench, or went with me into the arcade. parents and kids shopped together. These days kids are given a little money and told to scram.

I can see letting your child loose in a neighborhood shopping center, but the Mall of America is a whole new cup of tea.

One difference is that these Japanese girls can get paod on their own, and don't have a pimp, and I doubt that they would do it if they did, but in the U.S. the idea of pimp-free prostitution is pretty strange.

It's not the kids that are the problem, but the adults....I could go to the mall by myself at 14, but I am a dude, and that was quite a while ago. Now I don't think I will let my boy do the same...only because there are so many more weirdos out there....
