Egg tracking system

Postby Steve Bildermann » Mon Feb 16, 2004 4:32 pm

This week, for want of anything better to do, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is running an experiment to track eggs. They'll be printed with an eat-by date and an 11-digit code that indicates the date they were collected, the producing farm, packing firm, and seller.

The system is an attempt to prevent incidents like that in December last year where some eggs that had been in refrigerated storage for six months were accidentally shipped out.

Ahhhh, how soon people forget. Up until the days modern refrigeration, surplus eggs were kept in "water glass" (glycerine) for many months.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:

Chinese have preserved eggs for 1,000s of years.

There are many different methods for preserving surplus eggs, Cold Storage is good for "5 to 8 months---The temperature of an egg-storage room should be maintained at +0.50C to -0.50C (31 to 33F) being the temperature usually preferred. A relative humidity of 75 to 85 per cent is necessary."
