I'll be doing this to my Xbox soon... I bought the X.B.I.T. modchip so I can (don't laugh) run Linux on it. I'd like a small media player for the home that I can use with software I like, not some company's idea of a media player.

I'm not interested in copying games and other things that are forbidden under the FG guidelines, but under the DMCA I'm allowed to modify the system to run equivalent software (re: Linux) under Fair Use.

I have my Xbox with an Xecuter chip. God I love Xbox Media Player. That app should be a permanent feature of Xbox.

There are quite a few other little apps out there. Gentoo for Xbox was released a while ago and I believe they are adding support for the new Focus video encoders with the new Xboxes.. :d

Gamecube modding seems cheesy.. that's why I'd never buy a gamecube.. that and their games are targetted at the under 12 generation.

Did you see the Laptop Self-Destruction bit with Ramzi the hacker.. I laughed my ass off :D

Eternal Darkness disagrees with you.

Modding a GC is pretty unnecessary. All it takes is a Freeloader or Action Replay disc and any system can play any game.

Yeah, but can you add a media player to gamecube? Can you add a 120-200GB HDD? :D Can you install Linux?

:D

Futher: I give you this game title as proof positive that Gamecube is cheesy:

You mean like this?

If the Cube had had a hard drive to begin with, then yes, you could. But it didn't, so you can't.

The Cube is less hackable because it was desinged to be a games machine, and nothing else. It excels at that.

Pikmin's actually a cool little puzzler. Nintendo's the only one of the three console makers willing to take a chance with their titles. Miyamoto came up with a funky idea for a game, and they let him run with it.

MS? Sony? Not likely. Say hello to proven franchies and rehashes. Any game that's truly innovative (Rez, for one) will get lost in the flood of crap and mediocrity on those two.

Not to say the Cube doesn't get shite games now and then, but the good/shite ratio is much better on it than the other two.

(And really, trying to judge a system based on one game? What if the only Xbox game you showed somebody was DOA: Extreme Beach Volleyball? Let's not talk about cheese.)

You take those who buy the PS2 and Xbox and compare them to those who buy the gamecube and you'll see the mean ages of PS2 and Xbox gamers are greater than those of the Gamecube generation.

I think indeed, that the gamecube is a fine gaming machine. But most of the games are geared toward children. Whereas Xbox and PS2 concentrate moreso on the older gamer... 15-35 (just a guess).

That is not to say that one is a definitive box for any one generation. I agree pikman is innovative but it is cheesy. Cheesy in the sense that it is a cutesy character that typifies the Japaneseque style.

Pikman was just an example, there are many mor. Almost all of the mario series are cheesy.. and it seems with every new release they get worse. Mario cart, Mario tennis.. Wario Ware Inc. Mega Party Game, Kirby Air Ride, Donkey Konga, Carmen Sandiego: The Secret of the Stolen Drums, RibbitKing and so on. I am not saying that Xbox and PS2 don't have cheesy games.. they do..

The best game IMHO for Nintendo was perfect dark or golden eye.

I am just saying that at least IMHO, most of the games for game cube are targetted at the 6-15 age evel... with a few exceptions. Even the controller is smaller for small hands.

But I will say some of the graphics of the games are outstanding. The game types that are available are amazing and so on...

But as you said it is only a gaming machine and it does it well. That is another reason I will never buy it. I want a gaming machine to function as more than just a console and as we have seen PS2 and Xbox are heading that route paving the way for the home entertainment system that takes the place of a game console, dvd player, music jukebox and so on.

As for running linux on it:

• IBM PowerPC CPU, 486 MHz
• ATI graphics
• 40 MB of total RAM
• 8 cm optical drive
• (optional) 10/100 Ethernet

My god the specs :D

And as it says:
[quote]Yes. It is not much use yet, but you can see something on the screen and telnet into it.[quote]

That is not running Linux. that is barely booting to it :D

But I hear they are gonna give the Xbox2 makeover and nix the HDD... so I don't know if I will ever buy another console again after that.... My PC handles games far better, and I love adding new maps, skins, weapons, and features that the modding community comes up with.
