New Japanese-American killer thriller from Barry Eisler

Barry Eisler(a Fellow FG who used to work as a lawyer in Japan) has a new John Rain book coming out in a few weeks. "Rain Fall" and "Hard Rain" were pretty decent reads. He's not shy on his web site with the reviews.
New book is called "Rain Storm". I think you get the picture on the trend in titles.
Japanese-American hit man John Rain returns for a third outing in RAIN STORM. This time he’s in Brazil, trying to leave his old life behind, until the CIA convinces him to take out an arms dealer who’s working in Southeast Asia. It’s a profitable job and should be a simple one, but Rain finds himself working against a second assassin, and events conspire to make him wonder whether this final assignment might be one big trap.

I liked the first two which were set primarily in Tokyo and a bit in Osaka. Don't know what the relocation to Asia will be like.
I met the guy in Japan and he is a good bloke. He did a whole slew of interviews with rags like Japan Times, Metropolis and Japanzine even though the additional sales from that coverage were never going to be big.

I read them - a good train read.. doesn't tax the grey matter too much but interesting enough to keep turning the pages.

And I will buy the next book too. He seems like a decent enough guy and good on him for making the effort of writing a book - something I don't think I am capable of.

Barry Eisler put out the following release last week:

Okay, time for a few John Rain announcements: the new book; the
upcoming tour; where I really worked in the US government...

The new book: "Killing Rain" hits bookstores on June 23. Its pre-
publication reviews have been raves: Publisher's Weekly calls it
"taut and compelling;" Kirkus says "a thriller as straight as an
arrow;" Deadly Pleasures gives it an "A" and says "No one is writing
a better thriller series today than Barry Eisler." You can read more
at:

http://www.barryeisler.com/en/reviews.htm

The previous book in the series, "Rain Storm," will be out in
paperback at the same time as "Killing Rain." Rain Storm won the
Mystery Ink Gumshoe Award for Best Thriller of 2004 -- against a
field of terrific finalists that included Robert Ferrigno, Alan
Furst, Dean Koontz, and Daniel Silva -- and has been nominated for
the Deadly Pleasures Barry Award, also for Best Thriller of 2004. Go
John Rain!

The tour: at almost 30 cities, this one is the biggest yet. We'll
be kicking off at Kepler's in Menlo Park as always on June 23 (with a
get-together afterward at Cafe Borrone next door -- bring a signed
copy of one of the Rain books for your complimentary wine); after
that, I'll be in San Francisco, Corte Madera, Thousand Oaks, Los
Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Scottsdale, Tucson, CIA
Headquarters in Langley, Bethesda, Bryn Mawr, Houston, Dallas,
Wichita, Hazelwood, Lexington, Cincinnati, Ann Arbor, Okemos,
Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver,
Denver, Boulder, and Sacramento. Hoo-ah! For details, go to:

http://www.barryeisler.com/en/press.htm

Where I really worked for the USG: sorry I've been vague about it
for all these years, and it's true that my paychecks came from the US
State Department, as my website always said... but in fact, from 1989
to 1992 I held a covert position with the CIA. The subject has come
up frequently at book signings and in correspondence with fans, and I
finally decided to apply for a change of status so I could be a bit
more forthcoming about the subject. Crimespree magazine ( http://
http://www.crimespreemag.com ) will have more on this in its July issue; for
now, take a peek at my updated bio and the amusing photo at:

http://www.barryeisler.com/en/biography.htm
http://www.barryeisler.com/en/faq.htm

Other news: There's a new section on my website called "Places,"
with photos of many of the locales that appear in the Rain books. If
you're curious, check out:

http://www.barryeisler.com/en/places.htm

And if you're traveling to any of the locations that appear in the
books (Bangkok, Hong Kong, Macau, Manila, Osaka, Phuket, Rio, Tokyo),
you can find contact information for all Rain's haunts at:

http://www.barryeisler.com/en/places2.htm

Also, I've signed with Putnam for another two Rain books, so expect
more Rain in the forecast. No new news on "John Rain: The Major
Motion Picture," but Barrie Osborne (Oscar-winning producer of the
Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Three Dogs & A Pony, who hold the
option now, are as good as it gets and if anyone can bring Rain to
the big screen, they can.

That's all for now -- hope to see you somewhere in the country during
the tour. And I hope you'll enjoy the new book!

It's kind of sad that rather than having a rabid fan base to deconstruct his work, like cataloging photos of the locations mentinoed and whatnot (like William Gibson's fans do on his website, or on their own websites), Eisler has to do it himself!

For reference, Gibson's website discussion on places in most recent novel.

FG description spotted in the fourth "John Rain" book:

"...As I moved past, I caught a glimpse of a grizzled expat looking out from one of its windows onto the street below, his expression that of a man serving a life sentence for a crime he doesn't understand..."

In-house counsel at Matsushita in Osaka? I turned down that job. Seriously - it's not a great position.

Japan Zone: Shiina Kippei is John Rain
Fictional Japanese-American assassin John Rain is coming to the big screen. Shiina Kippei (43) is to star in a mostly Japanese-language adaptation of "Rain Fall," the first book in the John Rain series by thriller writer Barry Eisler. Rain, an ex-US Special Forces hit man who "may not be a good man, but he's good at what he does" finds himself protecting the daughter of one of his victims against assassination by the CIA. Though some fans initially speculated that he might play the lead, British star Gary Oldman (50) has been named to play Rain's CIA nemesis William Holtzer. Max Mannix is both writing the script and directing. Shiina, an established though hardly high-profile actor, has appeared in over 30 movies including "Shinobi" (2005) and "Sakuran" (2007). Perhaps appropriately for his latest role, he is from the famous ninja city of Iga in Mie Prefecture.

Matt Damon has set the bar really high with the Bourne series. I've read a few of the Eisler books- they're fun fiction but I have a hard time imagining that this guy can create a character cooler than Bourne.
