while it seems like a decent book based on the excerpts, I have to say, I'm completely uninterested.

I mean, what's there to read about?

gaijin white girl comes to japan. gaijin white girl gets completely ignored/dissed by japanese men/japanese women/gaijin men in every way imaginable. end of story. big deal.

If I 'must' read the tale of a gaijin girl in japan, the most interesting story I can think of is one told by a swinging hostess with plenty of saucy tales. but some writer chick on a scholarship at a japanese newspaper doesn't exactly sound like a wild ride through the streets of tokyo. yawn.

ha.. I recently saw an incredibly stupid and awful documentary produced by the National Film Board of Canada, "Tokyo Girls."

It was about a bunch of canadian girls who worked as hostesses. One of them told her idiotic story about how she became the mistress of a yakuza oyabun, and when she realized what sort of deep shit she was in, she fled the country. But she couldn't quite forget that "normal" rich guy who offered her a million dollars (US money, not that worthless canadian scrip) to marry him for a year, but she refused him. He stalked her back to canada, and eventually married him once he'd gone broke, now that she was convinced he wasn't just trying to buy her affection. Sheesh, what a loser.

The excerpts don't encourage me to lash out on a copy and I can't even give it a deeper browse since it doesn't seem to be in any bookshop. Kinokuniya in Shinjuku usually gets a copy or two of FG-penned Japan books but this one is either selling like hot nikuman or hasn't made it onto the shelves.

It's in print, barely. It's self-published by a vanity press. The author pays them to print it, because nobody else would touch it.

Why the hell would anyone wish they could be left handed (or right handed for that matter)?

I actually saw that documentary ("Tokyo Girls") a few weeks ago. Honestly I was pretty engaged. It was a great idea (admittedly the execution could have been better) and it was the first time I've seen gaijin hostesses go on the record (without their faces blurred) and talk frankly about their business. It was also pretty interesting to see the Japanese men talk about their trips to the hostess bars. It's not 'must' viewing, but you have free time, it's worth looking at. My only major gripe is the name of the film, kinda misleading.

Actually, this seems to be more of an instant printing set up rather than a traditional vanity press (where rich and/or vain people paid large sums to have their book "published"). While there are some setup fees paid by the author, these places work by not printing books until there is actually an order for one.

While self publishing can have obvious conflicts (gosh, I'm such a good writer I can't deny the world my genius), the fact that mainline publishing has culled a vast sections of their back lists combined with industry consolidation means that self publishing is increasingly vital (and interestingly, probably more financially rewarding) option for many writers.

I can't imagine that it could be any worse than something like

Ugly Americans : The True Story of the Ivy League Cowboys Who Raided the Asian Markets for Millions

And if main line publisher can put out drivel like that with a straight face, give me a flawed but earnest self published work any day.

Hmm, I wonder if they'd publish homemade manga? If so, it'd solve my problem of not being able to get a Japanese work visa. Now, I know the options for publishing, I just need to work on getting more talented at drawing and writing.(And more knowledgeable in Japanese)
