Learning Japanese via a role playing game?

Postby Taro Toporific » Mon Jul 21, 2003 5:36 pm

Via http://lrnj.com/
Long story short: I'm making a serial RPG [role playing game] that teaches you Japanese. Enough Japanese to use a native dictionary.

Oh Budhha, it's not my idea/game. Nooooooooooo way, not me.

I was just quoting the RPG site. I have to say it would be a great way to learn the first 2 levels of Kanji---every Yu-Gi-Oh! or Pokemon kid learns an equivalent data-set of a 1,000 MEANINGLESS characters without any effort. Why not learn Kanji instead?

Want to learn real Japanese? Get Shenmue for Dreamcast. All the conversations are realistic and the vocabulary is useful. It's like a cheap study abroad experience. I'm replaying it with a dictionary now. You also get to beat up gaijin sailors in Yokosuka- what can be better than that?

Shenmue 3 is in development now, and when it ships it'll contain all 3 parts! Whoo-hoo!

From The Magic Box
Sega AM2 announced they have begin the development of Shenmue III: Special Edition, the platform is undecided. The game will include Shenmue I, II and III altogether as one package, to allow players to grasp the entire story of the series.

Now that is awesome news! I have the Japanese versions of I and II, but would love to play the whole series on a more modern system. Will it be X-Box? I wonder if the regional coding issue has been cracked for that system yet? With Dreamcast it's as simple as using a Gameshark Bootloader.

getting the dc chipped is far less hassle than a boot disc and saves wearing out the drive motor.. dont forgets you can play ports of mame etc also ..

theres around 10 different mod chips for the x box , ranging from idiot proof slot chips, to ones requiring some skill and solder, depends what you want to do.. course then you can sling in a 120gig hd and load it with dvx / isos or a mame/neo rom set and play some decent games..

the x box is already partially emulated btw..

theres also a software solution to running non mshit discs on it, if you know where to look, as for the public version, thats pending as the authors and msoft seem to be talking to lawyers..

I am SO happy that Shenmue 3 will have all the shenmue story arc.

My dreamcast along with my copy of Shenmue were stolen by someone I considered a "friend" (ill never loan out a game system again, even IF I'm not using it so much anymore)

I am currently playing Shenmue 2. But I was SO dissappointed it wasnt in Japanese.

I hope Shenmue 3 will be in Japanese. I really do.

Remember all those evil gaijin sailors from Yokosuka who you got to beat up? Here's a real one. Pity Ryo's off to Hong Kong, because we need him back in Japan.

Dropped phone leads cops to jewelry thieving U. S. sailor

A U.S. Navy sailor has been arrested in Nagoya for robbing goods worth 10 million yen from a Tokyo jeweler earlier this month, police said Tuesday.

Petty Officer First Class Rick Michael Miller, a 26-year-old crewmember of the Aegis cruiser USS Vincennes based in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, has admitted to the allegation.

Sorry about being late to the party. but I figured I should clear soemthing up about the Shenmue 3 game. Whether or not it will have all three games together is still undecided, the "information" that was quoted about it including all three parts came from a letter on one of Sega's websites by a fan about what he'd like to see.

Magic Box isn't the most reputable source, and as of now the development of Shenmue 3 isn't even confirmed. Sega just re-organized their development teams and Yu Suzuki (creator of Shenmue) got moved from AM-2 (the team that created Shenmue, Virtua Fighter, etc) to a new development team.
