As for Ichiro, I think he is quite possibily one of, if not the best baseball player of all time. And I think he is one of the more attractive Japanese men. You can tell he's been living in the states for a long while casue he is speaking his mind in a very un-japanese manner. I like it.

Actually, the US and Korea tied 1-1. Korea was dominating but the US scored against the run of play. US stopped a PK but Korea eventually scored the equalizer.

You may be thinking of after they scored they did what was supposed to be a short track speed skating slam at Apollo Ono. That guy really got into the Koreans heads, but the maturity of the Korean populace is a whole different subject.

That was the point Pete! This was after the match and had nothing to do with psych'ing the opposing team, it was mocking the US through a call made by the Oympic judges. I don't know enough about short track to comment whether it was a bad call or not, I just thought it was a poor show of sportsmanship on a separate incident that had nothing to do with the World Cup. It was a show of not just one person, as Ichiro, but four or five or more of the Korean team, and looked very much like they were trying to make a statement against the US, not the Team USA, or maybe it was both.

Recent comments by the Korean manager seem to suggest that they don't think Japan should even be in the semi-finals so by Blackcat's logic dissing your opponent seems to be Korea's prerrogative.

Judging a sport as boring is nothing less than an admission of ignorance of the rules and history of said sport. Any sport is interesting as long as you know how its played and have a emotional investment in the team. As an American who loves international football (soccer) I find myself in the lose/ lose position of having to explain the above stated on both sides of the sea to most English speakers.

But that being said, the fact that they dont wear pads in rugby only excentuates the fact that it is a sport of softies.

yeah and I never denied that, some here assumed I was defending koreans...i wasn't but the comments ichiro made i thought were a bit much..considering he's been living as a gaijin (in the US) he was also "allowed" to break local records, I remember when a FG in japan was in a position to do so, the J pitcher threw a pussy ball or something similar...correct me here if anyone remembers the details.

I also thought, along with blackcat, that Ichiro looked a bit wild-eyed when he spoke about playing Korea. It certainly looked like those games meant a lot more to him than the others.

I'd stop short or calling him out as a racist Korean-hater because what he actually said is pretty mild by the standards of international sporting insults. English teams have heard much worse from Australian, New Zealand, Welsh, French, Scottish and Irish teams over the years in a range of sports and we've generally returned the favour as well as taking the opportunity to have a crack at the Argentinians and Germans when the chance arises. As the other posters have said, the Koreans are not shy at venting their spleen in aggressive ways either.

If players step over the line and brings the game into disrepute then they deserve to be sanctioned. World football has recently been confonting the problem of racist fans and players. Black players are often jeered in Eastern Europe and the ruling body has deducted points from teams who cannot control their fans or forced them to play behind closed doors. If a player calls another a "black bastard" then he'll probably be fined and suspended. "Fat bastard" is OK.

It might have given everybody a warm, fuzzy feeling if the Korean and Japanese teams had hugged after the game and we'd seen pictures of them all together singing karaoke but no individual player should bear the responsibility for his country's diplomatic policy. If Ichiro wants to get himself up for the game by wanting to beat Korea so badly they'll never forget it then he's free to do so. In any other country, we would treat such statements as the typical posturing of an international sportsman rather than looking for a political subtext.

Yeah good points, I don't think Ichiro is a racist or korean hater for sure(but it wouldnt suprise me) but my wife originally defended him and saying his comments were taken out of context, however tonight she did say..hmm why is he SO pleased to beat korea? he said "Saiko kimuchi..." after beating korea.

Here's the thing, you mention that the Yonsama boom has pissed people off and I know that is true. However, if you had asked me a few years ago whether a Korean star would turn out to be a housewives' favourite in Japan and would spark a boom in interest in Korean drama, I would have been sceptical. But the boom happened. On top of that, BoA is a very successful music act in Japan despite everyone knowing she is Korean.

I got that wrong and so did a lot of people. The lesson is that it is too simplistic to see Korea/Japan relations in black and white. OK people might be pissed off at the Korea boom but, if the animosity is so strong between the countries, then how the hell did a Korea boom come about in the first place?
