AFP: Japan beat hosts China in East Asian football
Chinese fans spared Japan but turned on their own team instead as the hosts went down 1-0 in the East Asian championships here on Wednesday. Ear-splitting boos erupted in the final minutes and plastic bottles rained down on the pitch as Koji Yamase's early strike proved decisive for Asia's top team. Local fans, who traditionally give the former colonial power a rough ride, remained unexpectedly quiet during Japan's national anthem and cut out the loud booing that marred their win over North Korea. Perhaps it had something to do with newspaper articles in local press saying true football fans respect their opponents. However tempers boiled over towards the end as the crowd chanted "fire him" at China Football Association chief Xie Yalong...more...

On the other hand, A Japanese report claims that a hinomaru flag was set on fire while the plastic bottles and booing were aimed at the visitors.

That wasn't even exciting. Only one player strechered off! No broken bones, or mass hemorrhaging from gaping wounds. They would have been laughed off the pitch in any country playing soccer of any level.

i only caught the last five minutes of the game when i got home from work, but my wife and father-in-law said that the referee and judgement calls were absurd and blatantly biased against japan.

apparently, a completely clear goal was uncounted and the chinese team was playing very dirty.

i was happy to see japan win.

now if only they'd do something about that really obnoxious game announcing.

I watched the game and besides being bored to tears, it was a hard fought match with no outstanding ability apparent, although the J-goal was a nicely done center, which fortunately the Chinese goal keeper could not hold on to and the rebound was buried. A bit of luck, but although there were some questionable calls, I don't think they were especially bad, definitely not blatantly biased. There have been a lot worse.

However, I have heard the same story as James from my office staff this morning of how bad the Chinese were and the referees were much worse than they have ever been. Listening to their wailing, I wonder if I was watching the same match? I am really glad the Chinese didn't win, or I would have had to take the rest of the day off to escape the moaning.

AFP: Japan slam China's rough tactics in football clash
Japan's chief delegate on Thursday said he was considering filing a protest against China over "dangerous acts" during their East Asian championships clash here. Goalkeeper Zong Lei injured Japan's Michihiro Yasuda with a flying kick, while defender Li Weifeng grabbed winger Keita Suzuki by the throat during the hosts' ill-tempered 1-0 defeat. Playmaker Yasuhito Endo also received a kick to the thigh which left him writhing on the floor. "We deplore yesterday's performances very much. As the delegation, we are considering making some representations to the EAFF (East Asian Football Federation)," Kuniya Daini told reporters. "Dangerous acts could threaten players' careers." Daini also hit out at North Korean referee Song O-Tae, who handed out four yellow cards to the hosts but did not send anyone off...more...

I know it's not relevant, but looking at that keeper's foul, does anyone remember Germany's goalkeeper, Schumacher, taking out a French player with a really nasty foul in the World Cup. That was a really nasty foul.

Yeah, I remember that. As a kid my friends and I used to watch a show called 'Soccer Made in Germany' which had one hour recaps of the games.
