The Boise State football program has put a new twist on "foreign exchange student."
Eight representatives of the American football club at Hosei University in Tokyo are spending two weeks observing the Broncos' spring practices and meetings, hoping to learn new tricks that will keep Hosei among the elite college football teams in Japan.
Hosei, which began an international academic partnership with Boise State in 2006, has appeared in 13 of the past 16 college football championship games in Japan. Hosei won back-to-back college titles in 2005 and 2006.
Coach Hitoshi Aoki said he wanted to visit Boise State because he sees similarities with his program. Hosei isn't a big-name school in Japan, but it wins regularly.
"We do not possess the best facilities," Aoki said, "but still we're competing at the very top level in Japan."
Hosei sent five coaches, two trainers and one faculty representative on the trip. The coaches began their visit Monday and will stay through the Spring Game on April 11
