Hyogo Hole-In-One Hustle

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Sep 21, 2008 12:31 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Yomiuri: Officer 'profited from false hole-in-1 claim'
A Hyogo Prefecture police officer is suspected of falsely claiming to have shot a hole in one at golf to cash in on an insurance policy he concluded with an insurance firm. The Hyogo prefectural police on Friday began questioning the 24-year-old police officer of Kakogawa Police Station about his alleged involvement in a scheme to defraud the firm of 700,000 yen. The officer made a contract with the firm in September last year, which saw him pay more than 10,000 yen to the firm on the condition that if he were to shoot a hole in one, the firm would pay him up to 700,000 yen. The officer filed two claims with the firm under the contract--the first in November, and another in June--declaring he had shot aces at a golf course in Himeji in the prefecture, according to sources. The firm contacted police after the second claim was filed, regarding as suspicious the fact that the officer claimed to have shot both holes in one at the same course, the sources said.

In Japan, you have to buy Hole-In-One Insurance because it is customary to buy gifts for your foursome, all the drinks and soapland that night, AND you have to takyubin 10,000-30,000 yen gifts to all your corporate "golf buddies."

A hole in one can be such an expensive ambition to realize that insurance companies even offer cover against the expenses incurred. One such policy, offered by Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance Co., for example, gives 300000 yen ...
...such a policy in place, and so was able to fund his 500,000 yen outlay from that insurance. That allowed him to send a gift -- a copper beer mug -- to 130 people in all, including colleagues in his company, business associates and his private golfing friends....

Maybe I beat you to it by decades.
I heard about Hole-In-One BRIBE Insurance back in the 60s when I was playing Caddy Shack carrying double pro bags for Japanese executives at Riverside Golf Club.

It's also customary to leave a commemorative marker such as a tree, or bush, planted behind the hole with a plaque. This can be the most expensive of all the trash that is required.
