Hairdresser bullied sumo wrestlers?!

Sumo stablemaster questioned over assault on hairdresser
July 25, 2009 - The Mainichi Daily News---The Japan Sumo Association is questioning sumo stablemaster Oitekaze over the discovery that he and some his students assaulted a sumo hairdresser in March,...the stablemaster and several wrestlers attacked the hairdresser at the lodging facilities of the Oitekaze sumo stable in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, hitting him several times in the face.
The hairdresser, aged 22 at the time, reportedly suffered bruises requiring three weeks' medical treatment, and he resigned from the sumo association.
Oitekaze reported the incident to the sumo association after the start of the current grand sumo tournament in Nagoya. Commenting on the incident, Oitekaze indicated that the hairdresser had bullied wrestlers...more...

Although the media haven't reported it, one of the members of Sumo Forum dug a little deeper and found that the failed hairdresser was formerly a failed sumo wrestler...

Whenever anything about sumo violence comes up, it always seems to involve a posse. Somehow I've never heard tell of a bunch of boxers, karateka, whatever ganging up on an intended victim. Are they afraid that if they went one-on-one with somebody they might actually get hurt themselves?
