[floatr]Image[/floatr]Kyodo: Taiwan prosecutors detain Japanese manager of baseball team
Taiwanese authorities on Monday detained a Japanese manager of a local professional baseball team in relation to a game-fixing scandal. Shin Nakagomi, a former pitcher for the Hanshin Tigers in Japan and currently manager of the Brother Elephants of the Chinese Professional Baseball League -- Taiwan's top league -- was detained at the island's main international airport in Taipei as he tried to return to Japan amid the scandal. Eight players from various CPBL teams, including the Brother Elephants, have been listed as defendants in the case, while scores more have been questioned by prosecutors. Among those listed as defendants are Chang Chi-chia, formerly of Japan's Seibu Lions, and former Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tsao Chin-hui. Chang, 29, is currently a pitcher for Taiwan's La New Bears, while Tsao, 28, is the leading pitcher for the Brother Elephants. The players are accused of colluding with the alleged head of a local criminal gang to win or throw matches by specific margins, according to local media.
