MDN: Sumo organizers struggle to attract fans to tournaments
FUKUOKA -- The number of fans who go to watch sumo tournaments continues to decline and authorities are at a loss to deal with the problem...Officials at a leisure and entertainment research institute run by the PIA Corp. said that the number of sumo fans who went to watch tournaments in 2004 was 575,000, a drop of 2.4 percent from 2003...[they] said that the sumo association should come up with new, innovative ideas such as holding an arm-wrestling event between sumo wrestlers and fans and other things involving the Internet...more...

That's Chiyotaikai doing the hop-skip in that animated above.

Sumo's popularity will rebound once Japan has a native son as Yokozuna.

Maybe it's their lame ass stuffy attitudes...

A stablemaster said that it's sad for him to see fans applaud popular wrestler Takamisakari's pre-bout, grandstanding antics.

It's like applauding Forest Gump. He slaps himself in the face before entering the dohyo because his stablemaster used to do that to him when he was a younger wrestler.

Am I alone in just cheering for the foreigners to kick some jap butt every time I went to one of these? Of course, the pairings were always rigged to fuck over the foreigners in the end :(

Well, that's what many of the Japanese fans are doing... in reverse. If you want to yank the chain of a Japanese sumo fan, you can sympathize with them, "yeah, American baseball just isn't as fun to watch anymore with all those Japanese players taking the top spots... we really should put a limit on the number of players that can join U.S. teams"

Well, I finally got to my first Sumo match, last night in Osaka - the 13th day of the current tournament.

Going in, I was more committed to ticking off my list something I've been meaning to do for a long time but have never go around to. And it's surprised me, but I really enjoyed it.

There were quite a few foreigners there, but the Japanese were mostly older - probably the timing was a big factor, being a Friday and finishing around 6pm.

Nevertheless, if you've never been, I can thoroughly recommend it. Grab a bento & some liquid refreshments & head in to watch the fun.

 I have yet to go, but I really enjoy having Sumo on TV for lazy afternoon weekends; it's on now. The last few tournaments have been fairly competitive, too..

Didn't somebody make them wear swimming trunks at some venue in the states when they were on tour a couple of years back?

Watched the last hour on TV tonight. The crowd looked like that for last match]is[/I] in Kyushu.. But it still looks bad.

Is there any difference between the weekday and weekend/holiday crowds?

I was thinking the same thing; Probably so. This being the first week of the tournament might be a factor as well..
