Teddy Riner of France cries in anger on the podium after narrowly losing to a Japanese newcomer in the open final and missing a chance to make history at the world judo championships. Riner, who won a third straight over-100 kilogram title, would have become the first man to win five world gold medals if he beat 20-year-old Daiki Kamikawa...

Riner rips judges as world championships close
Daily Yomiuri | Sep. 15, 2010
....
Kamikawa... was awarded a split judges decision, after the match went scoreless for five minutes of regulation and the three-minute sudden death overtime.
"The judges were not fair," said Riner, who was in tears on the medal podium. "Judo has a moral code, but the code was not respected here. Maybe I will stop judo right now, I feel so bad."
The sports news programs limited their reports to a leg sweep executed by Kamikawa in the extra period than sent Riner to his knees, but which was not enough to score a decisive point.
What wasn't shown were the 7-1/2 or so minutes in which Kamikawa did virtually nothing but flop to the mat each time Riner tried to launch an attack...more...

So France surrender...

Side note... Teddy Riner... sounds as French as Mopar Hemicuda...

Just saying... But Teddy isn't even on the French calendar... The only 3 things that might proof taht he's french is the fact that he's black and a crybaby... oh... and he lost (but at least he didun't headbutt anybody)

He needs to watch the video of the match. Kamikawa knocked him down four times of note. They weren't scoring points, but the one in the overtime was close. Teddy's only good move was probably on a waitress the night before. He's got no bitch, unless it was the fact he lost to Kamikawa who couldn't get into a real Judo match unless he bought a ticket.

I think it's the standard "there's gotta be an unfair reason I lost" rant by a four time world champ that got his dick knocked into the dust.....

From the Yomiuri. It's written by one of the reporters on the English edition rather than being a translation from the Japanese newspaper:

Depending on your perspective, the world judo championships ended Monday night in the best possible way, or the worst. Host Japan celebrated a new hero, Daiki Kamikawa, who slew mighty French giant Teddy Riner to return the prestigious men's open class title to the homeland of judo and cap a 10-gold medal haul. But the final match of the five-day event at Tokyo's Yoyogi Gym also concluded with Riner, the biggest name in judo today, questioning the integrity of the sport and making threats, undoubtedly idle, about quitting.

Kamikawa, at 20 a year younger than Riner, etched his name alongside such greats as Yasuhiro Yamashita and Naoya Ogawa when he was awarded a split judges decision, after the match went scoreless for five minutes of regulation and the three-minute sudden death overtime.

What wasn't shown were the 7-1/2 or so minutes in which Kamikawa did virtually nothing but flop to the mat each time Riner tried to launch an attack. "If I lose to someone better than me, I applaud them. But he was not better than me," Riner said.

More than the 2-1 vote by the judges, Riner was most upset that the match even went into overtime. Kamikawa received a caution with 40 seconds left in regulation, but should have been hit with more, Riner contended, which would have given him the win. "The fight should never have gone to the golden score," Riner said. "He should have gotten a second shido." Asked about Riner's reaction, Kamikawa said, "I won, so I think it's fair."

So how did two of the three judges consider Kamikawa the more dominant of the two? Arnaud Romera, a reporter for France-2 TV who covers judo around the world, chalked it up to the home-field advantage. Dismissing any hint of corruption, he said it is not unusual for judges to be swayed by their surroundings. "It was because of the context, the pressure in Japan," Romera said. "The most dominant was Riner. Anywhere outside of Japan, he would have won the fight."

While at a loss to explain the decision, Romera compared the mindset to that in boxing, in which punches landed in later rounds subconsciously carry more weight. That runs contrary to the rules. "When judo goes to the flags [a judges decision], they have to [consider] the entire fight," he said.

The decision adds to the rich and, at times, controversial history between the two judo powers. While Japan came out ahead this time, it can expect no favors at the next world championships--the 2011 edition will be held in Paris.
