Is today's amazing women's world cup victory Japan's greatest international sporting achievement?

Winning the "kin medaru" in the female marathon two Olympics in a row, Sydney and Athens, has to be ranked right up there with this soccer win if not higher.

lost to gaijin in their national sport in the olypics
degrade themselves by carrying LV purses and wearing tight jeans
made a big scandal known world wide for baseball betting (sumo)
make more skat and kiddie porn vids than other cuntries?

other than that... i dunno

Gold, silver and bronze in the ski jump at the 1972 Sapporo Olympic Games has gotta be up there...first ever Winter Olympic medals for Japan, as well.

1976 Montreal, winning the men's group gold over the filthy commie Soviets....but only after Shun Fujimoto scores a 9.7 on the rings. Oh, yeah, he did so with a broken kneecap.

Naoto Tajima and Chuhei Nambu, two long- and triple-jumpers from the 1930s who held world records and won Olympic gold, beating Jesse Owens (sometimes).

I think Nadeshiko Japan has gotta be ranked pretty high in the annals of Japanese sporting achievement...but, as SJ pointed out, we are talking about women's soccer, which is hardly a major global sport. Of course, the Japanese will forget all about that for weeks, months, years...and, rightfully so. They've had to go through a lot of shite this year (and us with 'em) and if they get a feelgood boner over these birds, good luck to 'em, I say.

Good call. I was on the rail at the bottom of the jump for that event. BTW after that Winter Olympics there was a loud out-cry for the Broad jump to be moved to the Winter Olympics, and held in Sapporo as a permanent event in Susukino....

That's a good call, too...I've jumped a few broads in Susukino and can highly recommend it.

One way of looking at it is Japanese sportswomen are superior to the sportsmen, it has been suggested that because society is tougher on women here the men turn out lazy with a sense of entitlement, while the women have to work, and this makes them tougher, Yawara-chan for example, tough as old boots.

Whatever your opinion of ice skating is as a sport you have to accept it requires nerves, and the Japanese do well here too with the women.

So the take out here for me is confirmation that if you want something doing properly in Japan, ask a woman.

Indeed.

2. You've got their shoes.

I think you could apply this to any country in the world, and not just for sports. (Hey girls, if I say stuff like this, can I have a BJ?)

Yes, if you want to get drunk under the table, just ask a Brit girl. ;)

This to me was was one of the greatest Olympic moments ever, yet when I ask Japanese people about it, it hardly registers.

Clearly it was the old battle horse Ozeki Kaio, who by hook or by crook hung on until he bested Chiyonofuji's record...

Absolutely.

Asked years later whether he would do it again, Fujimoto replied with an emphatic: "No, I would not".

Just to take a bit of the feel-good vibe from the thread, we could always nominate the Korean geezers that won medals for Japan at Hitler's Games and then got rolled out again for Seoul in 1988 (and promptly fried all the peace pigeons that had been roosting on the ridge of the Olympic Flame they lit...).
