Date-Krumm Wimbledon Thriller

SI: Even in Wimbledon defeat, Date Krumm makes enduring statement
In the match of the day, if not the match of the year, Venus Williams advanced with a gripping Centre Court win over Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 8-6. Take away the grunting and this was divine tennis. Nifty shotmaking from all coordinates of the court. Successful networking opportunties. Angles. Fluctuating momentum. Just a thoroughly entertaining affair...Date Krumm, as you've no doubt heard, is 40 years old. In tennis years, that means you practically need to make her food into liquid, that she is a passenger requiring a little extra assistance. As Date Krumm pushed Venus deep in the third set, another Japanese woman, Misaki Doi, took the court. Doi was born in 1991. By that point Date had already played multiple Wimbledons. Yet there Date was, basted in sweat -- thanks to the roof that turned Centre Court into a hothouse terrarium -- coming up clever angles, chipping and charging, serving and volleying throwing up rainbowing lobs that landed smack on the baseline, having it out with a five-time champion who was bigger by nine inches, stronger, faster, and, yes, almost a decade younger. Date had more winners. Date won more points. Date did herself proud....[She] didn't win today. But the statement she made will echo in the game for a good long time...more...

When she first started her come back, I thought it was a phase and after a few good lickings she would go back to retirement, but damn she is pretty good.

I never did understand why she walked away at such a young age. I don't think she could have risen to be number 1, but I'm sure she could have made it to the top 5 is she had tried. Anyway it was a good match, but you have to say, the Williams sisters are great on grass. Combined they have won 9 titles at Wimbledon, and it seems recently they just come out to play there, and not anywhere else, which is even more amazing.

I gotta agree with you Dimmer. The script read like the traditional J-sports drama: "Aging star tries to find the old glitter" They build that up a couple of times of two, or three appearances and make some side money. When it becomes obvious the old star is shit and getting his/her ass handed to them every game, they graciously call a quit to the comeback try and hold one massive sayonara event for some more duckets.

Unfortunately, nobody told Date-Krumm about the J-script, she keeps winning, or trying hard to win, instead of being the obliging, losing J-aged star.

I hope she can keep it up for a couple more years.

Tennis: 'I might play until I'm 50!' - Japan's Date-Krumm
ChicagoTribune.com, Jan 16, 2012
Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm, at 41 the oldest player at the Australian Open, said she might continue playing until 50 after being bundled out of the year's first grand slam on Monday. The former world number four became the second oldest player to compete in the Australian Open women's singles in the Open era behind Beverly Rae, who was 44 when she played in 1974. While Date-Krumm's time was fleeting, overpowered in the first round 6-3 6-2 by Greece's Eleni Daniilidou, it had been worth it, she told Reuters on Monday.
