Biggest sumo-tori will quit

"You don't see a lot of 740-pound men walking down the street. I suppose I am an oddity."--Emanuel Yarbrough

Life in Ring Wears Champion Around the Edges
The New York Times / May 16 {Warning: Obesity-causing registration required}
....has been a few months since Emanuel Yarbrough, perhaps the most famous amateur sumo wrestler in the world, has been to the gym to train. He slips off his size 19 sneakers and maneuvers his 6-foot-8, 740-pound bulk onto the mat. His arms arch out at his sides because of his huge girth, sweat starts to drip down his forehead and, facing him, one feels pity ....
... there will be no workout today. It is too strenuous. He is too tired.....
The quirky world of amateur sumo wrestling, one that has taken Mr. Yarbrough, 39, around the globe, may soon be about to lose one of its most recognizable stars. His health, like that of many wrestlers his age and size, has begun to deteriorate....

My best friend for some 15 years weighed 800 lbs. (we did stuff besides pick up chicks) I played in a band with him and he was the best front man EVER! He could make anything funny.

He was OK till we hit our 30's then it just embarrassing to be around him. He was fat and a slob, he couldn't bend over to clean up his house so it was waist high in trash. You didn't walk through his house you cleared a path by kicking stuff out of the way.

The man's toilet was brown for god sakes, there was even some crap spattered on his walls (which he never did clean off)

One Thanksgiving he brought a plate home from his Family and I happened to be there while he ate it. A year passes and again he brings a thanksgiving plate home and lo and behold, last years dirty dishes were still there.

He eventually got a stomach bypass and he got married, the girl is a very good looking (in a Texas sort of way) normal girl, it boggles the mind.

Even after the surgery he still must be pretty big huh? I guess she's a chubby chaser. I heard at fat conventions they rent more hotel rooms to skinny chubber chasers than actual fat people.

I don't know how many of you read the awesome Giant Robot Magazine magazine out there but Emanuel Yarbrough does a Q&A in every mag in the "Ask Eman" column.

He answers the mysteries of the Earth like "Why is my boyfriend gassy?" and "Would you Sumo wrestle Jesus?"

Funny guy

UFC 3 Veteran Emmanuel Yarborough passes away at 51

manny.jpg

He was known as the world’s largest athlete; an American amateur sumo wrestler and mixed martial arts (MMA) competitor, also having competed in judo, wrestling, and American football, and today we are saddened to learn of the passing of Emmanuel Yarborough.

[...]

Manny as he liked to be called competed at UFC 3 on September 9, 1994, going up against Keith Hackney. He would lose via TKO and compete twice more in MMA, but not in the UFC; once in Shooto, and once in Pride.

He was 6 ft 8 in tall and has weighed up to 882 lb, holding the Guinness World Record for the heaviest living athlete. He was the 1995 World Amateur Sumo Champion and is considered to be one of the most famous sumo wrestlers outside Japan.

From 1996 to 1997, Yarborough competed in professional wrestling for Catch Wrestling Association in Germany, where he had gimmick matches based around his sumo career. He took part in a sumo tournament against the entire staff of the promotion, being declared winner after beating everybody except August Smisl and Terminator Mastino. He later won another tournament, beating the likes of Osamu Nishimura and Jason Neidhart, Jim Neidhart’s cousin.
