Aussie Sumo Schoolgirl Gave Up on Japan

The Sun: Schoolgirl was a sumo star at 14
SCHOOLGIRL Sammy Stacey was thrilled when she became a sumo star at just 14. The youngster couldn't believe her luck when she became the first Western girl ever to be invited to join a top sumo school in Japan. But Sammy's delight soon turned to misery when her sumo teachers began to force-feed her and she ballooned to a giant 23 STONE. Sammy, now 16, said: "I was so excited about gaining a place. But it was horrible. Because I was low-ranking, I had to get up at five and prepare breakfast for the other students. No-one spoke English and I didn't understand what was going on in lessons. I felt constantly sick from all the food we had to eat"...she claims when she arrived at the school her sumo teachers forced her to eat greasy porridge with eggs and lumps of meat, and screamed at her until she finished up to five bowls at a time. She said: "Every morning it was the same thing -- eat, eat, eat. As soon as I put my bowl down, they were prodding me to pick it up again." Sammy was told to snack on beans covered in oil before lunch, which was more meat and rice. Her daily calorie intake was around 5,500, nearly three times the average recommended for a woman. After six months Sammy called her parents and begged them to take her home...more...

Board regulars might remember Sammy from this post in the Random Gaijin thread. She trained in Australia on a diet of Weetabix and lasagne.

sounds like they wanted to get rid of her. From what I understand, pro sumo guys don't eat before the five hour morning practice session.

I'm betting she just didn't do her research well enough, and wasn't really aware of what she was getting into in the first place.

You'd think she'd at least spend a few months learning Japanese first.

Also, she's really gross. Is that *before* or after the weight gain?

She was only 14 or 15. Old enough to take responsibility for herself but the adults around her, both in Japan and Australia might have done at bit more preparation themselves to help her know what she was getting into.

Her story reminds me a little of Nathan Strange who was the first European in sumo. I met Brad "Animal" Lesley and Jesse Kuhaulua (Takamiyama) in Tokyo at one basho and Jesse asked me to track down Strange because he had heard there was a British guy interested in sumo and wanted to give him a try-out. They got together soon after anyway without my help and he started his career at 18 at the same time as Musashimaru. He was mediocre but got a lot of hazing from his stablemates who didn't appreciate all the attention he was getting. If he'd done as well as Musashimaru, he might have stuck around but decided to leave after around nine months .

In most civilized countries, forcing an already obese teenager to scarf over 5,500 calories a day would probably constitute abuse.

Her parents are also idiots for allowing this to happen.

She and her parents are a bunch of idiots..what were they expecting???? A high school student exchange program?

I once met a Japanese American teenage fashion model that had to drink 2 liters of water a day and eat like a bird. She and her mom lived out of a suitcase....TV CM shot in Tokyo, model casting in NY, event in Paris...sounds like the good life, but the moment you put a minor in a situation like this, their world turns upside down...both her and her mom looked stressed out, exhausted and emaciated...I think she is out of modeling altogether now.

Sometimes your biggest wish turns into a nightmare.

You hit the nail on the head Harry. But doesn't that kinda go with a lot of the entitlement ideas of today's youth and society. It's like all you gotta do is say "I'm going to be a sumotori" and everybody is supposed to run up and help you become a Yokozuna.

True. The problem is also the bunch of Asia idealists that fell in love with Bruce Lee, Karate Kid and all those distorted portrayals of Asia and end up coming here thinking that becoming a ninja, a samurai, the next Steven Segal or Yokozuna will be a walk in the park. Classic case of "be careful what you wish for."

Part of the problem is the thinking that being fat somehow equates to success in sumo. I'd rather take a kid with raw talent and a strong work ethic, and bulk them up later once the skills were in place. That's one thing the Mongolians brought back to Ozumo - the skills game. The Hawaiians had incredible bulk, and that did help them until they managed to develop some skills. But the Mongolians have been even more successful going the "skills first" route.

there was a special on TV last year about some fat kid becomming a sumo. when he went to the regional tournament, he lost to some skinny kid.

skill before anything else, but you need all around development to be top (obviously)

Yes, sumo needs more Mongolians to keep the Japanese in check, they might end up changing the rules like they are trying to do to Judo LOL
