you think they paid him to throw this fight? I didn't see it.. but i mean recently two gaijin have went down.. Morning Blue Dragon and the Beast.. mmm...

Maybe the promoters want to make Japanese happy so they get these gaijin to take dives for a cash "advance"??

Just a theory..

IF you saw it, did it look like Bob S. got the crap beat out of him? Cause I've seen him attack in K1, and he is a tough guy to take on.. especially when he starts wailing on his opponents.

Sapp got plenty of REAL hard boots to the head. His wrestling was garbage and he laid on his back kicking in the air like Pee Wee Herman in a bitachfight. If Sapp took a dive, he EARNED his payout.

Is Sakuraba still fighting K-1

Postby tomasurii » Sun May 23, 2004 1:56 am

It's been a while since watching K-1 or Pride, but is Sakuraba still fighting?

Sak's always been a favorite. Love that flying head stomp.

This makes it even more suspect that he threw it cause he knew it was a non-title match... why not get paid to go down.. like some girls in Shibuya?

It wouldn't surprise me if it was rigged. It must be good for business because here we are talking about it.

I saw the fight on TV. Fujita made Sapp look like a total chump. I was shouting at the TV for Sapp to get off his ass and throw a punch. He didn't get one punch off against the guy. He got taken down immediately and then took several kicks to the head until the fight was called. You could even see the swelling on his head after he got up.

I doubt it was a dive. Anyone who's a big MMA/K-1 fan knows that as big as Sapp is, he's just not a good fighter.

Yeah, he's huge, and not nearly as slow as a few other people I've seen that were roughly his size, but that doesn't change the fact that he's still a lumbering beast and not a whole lot more. He made a huge splash in Japan when he beat on some chumps twice as small as him in Pride, and his bull-rushing of the overly-defensive Ernesto Hoost earned him a name in K-1, but it's been all downhill since then.

He got schooled in K-1 when he came across some really skilled opponents in Mirco Filipovic and Remy Bonjasky, and now his MMA prowess is being exposed as well. Of course Sapp is a bit more than just a freak show, and Maurice Smith and Josh Barnett are more than competent trainers in striking/grappling/submissions, but Bob is simply too big and too slow to ever compete at the very top level of these events.

As for Fujita, in my opinion he's easily the best Japanese heavyweight in MMA. He might be a bit of a slow and, well, boring fighter, but that should only detract from his popularity, not the general opinion of how good a fighter he really is. Now on a world-scale he's not near the top either, but his victory over Sapp isn't really that surprising.

Some months back there was a problem child named Josh, it's hard to explain it now, but he spent all day, every day posting crap. He (and some of his friends) would hijack every thread to ramble about how great he was and how all Japanese women wanted him.

The mods had to really work hard to get rid of him, which included banning names and phrases.

The whole event was rigged, IMO. Romanex was, I believe, Inoki's baby. I found it interesting that 95% of the pro wrestlers won their matches last night, and in all the other fighting events I've seen, the pro wrestling 'actors' always get their asses beaten...HARD! I cry foul bullshit...

Image Inoki... The one on the right.

I mean even if Bob Sapp was the slowest fighter out there, his whole body was about 2 times that of Fujita.. Look at the arms, legs, and body in general. Sapp is no Bruce Lee but he is no Butterbean either.. He has speed for a man of his frame. I just find it hard to believe that he'd get beaten so easily.

I could see if it dragged on and on and he lost.. but the way it looked, was too convenient to call that a "top" performance.

But hell who knows these days.

Fujita is not just a pro wrestler. He was an alternate on Japan's olympic wrestling team and has been in plenty of Pride fights against much better opponents than Sapp. He's not a very good fighter but he's better than Sapp and is tough as hell. Of course the fight could have been a work (I didn't see it). I'm sure K-1 has done some works before and I know Pride has (like when Mark Coleman lost to Takada).

Or maybe just about the time the audience decides he's washed-up he'll do a little tribal dance or go into a daze (ala American style Wrestling) and rise to the top again.

With gaijin dominating Sumo I think Japan needs to have a home grown champion to root for. I could really care less about boxing, but should the great white hope suddenly appear I'd watch every fight.

Umm, there are plenty of world-class Japanese MMA fighters (and even quite a few K-1 ones), just look to the lower weight divisions. In fact, watch a Shooto show or two; it's pretty much the only legit organization in Japan, and it'd be good if others got to see what it's all about before Pride's Bushido wing steals away all their best fighters.

I'm not even sure why all these Japanese organizations simply don't throw in the towel and become semi pro-wrestling corporations. Inoki has made it public knowledge that he'd like pro-wrestling and MMA to somehow combine into a bizzare quagmire that would give him a permanent hard-on, and it looks like his dream is coming true. More and more organizations are hiring freak-show acts to draw in crowds, various costume and uniform rules are being losened, fighters are getting booked based soley on their popularity rather than their record/skill/talent, pro-wrestling shows are doing MMA matches while MMA shows are doing worked fights. It's just a mess.

MMA in the states and Canada isn't quite at the level of such combative sports as boxing, but it's a hell of a lot closer than its Japanese counterparts.

Bob Sapp's home is in Juanita, WA, close by where I live. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob Sapp after his fight with Kimo in Las Vegas. I actually watched the video of the fight with him as he watched for the first time his fight with Kimo. It was neat to hear him comment on some of the kicks that he had absorbed from Kimo.

I know Sapp isn't the best of fighters, but I somehow think that the Japanese get their kicks when the stereotypical 'big american' gets taken down by a smaller fighter. Its the Japanese that put Sapp on this pedestal in the first place, when he probably wasn't worthy of that status as a fighter to begin with. Anybody who follows K1 knows that playing in the NFL and being able to bench 500lbs+ does not make you a fighter, so why then would K1 fans root for Sapp?....( I root for him cause I think he's the underdog).

I don't know..but thats just me.

And the being-black part. And the muscular part. And the former NFL career part. And the ability-to-snap-a-guy's-leg-like-a-twig part. Other than those and a few other things, you guys could be twins :!:
