Take, it's a shame the flower children will not get a chance at any more Anglos or Saxons. I guess the power of Paraguay (population of 6.3 million) was just to much for Okada no miya sama and his masses.

Having said that, Japan played like shit. The team and players were good, but as usual, Chump Okada had them in their "unique Japan defensive formations," to wear down the opposition. so they could come on strong in the end. Huh?
Statistics
Paraguay Japan

18 Shots 16
6 Corner kicks 5
1 Yellow cards 4
0 Second yellow card and red card 0
0 Red Cards 0
58% Possession (%) 42%

If you watched the game and not the barrage of highlights this morning which only show the better of the shots, you will notice that of the 16 shots Japan actually took, only a couple that were well set up and within any sort of an effective range. The rest of the shots were launched from somewhere near Zimbabwe and there was plant life already growing on the ball by the time it got near the goal.

At this level, you don't give the other team the ball for damn near 60% of the time and have a great chance of winning, no matter how "unique" your defense may be. You need to take it to the opposition and get the ball in the nets.

The first move upon return to the land of four seasons for Team Japan should be the removal of General Okada, his staff and anyone who even knows his name. They need some new coaching to flush his entire "unique Japan soccer" out of their system and bring their playing strategies up to the level needed to win. They've got the talent, desire and support. They just need a leader. A shidosha that can let them win, not one that just wants to be unique even if it means losing.

Here's another statistic.

Japan has "earned" the most fouls in the entire World Cup thus far. I forget the exact number, but it was 60-something. Slovenia was second with 50-something fouls.

This was being trumpeted on TV this morning as being proof that the team "played hard, and played to win."

Sometimes I just don't understand sports.

That's the same TV that in the days leading up to the game, trumpeted Paraguay as a heavy fouling team that bordered on playing "dirty." I wondered at the time if they weren't setting that up as a reason to explain a loss, so they could blame it on poor calls by the Referee (that being in vogue during the current cup).

Paraguay's DiSilva WAS playing dirty. The commentators were livid talking about the forearms he was throwing.

Apparently TBS had Komano's mother on TV to apologize for her son missing the kick. Stay classy, Japan.

BIASED BELGIAN REF...

Postby thumper » Wed Jun 30, 2010 7:06 pm

American Oyaji wrote:Paraguay's DiSilva WAS playing dirty. The commentators were livid talking about the forearms he was throwing.

So, someone else watched the same game as me...

I gave the biased Belgian Ref a red card for not yellow-carding DiSilva for a start. (DiSilva should have been sent off after his third foul - the dirty prick.) And Japan didn't deserve two of the yellow cards that he gave them.

Why FIFA doesn't select more, better quality refs from major league countries (like France, Germany, England, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Argentina) beggars belief.

All credit to plucky Japan...:flame:

The posted version has been tampered with. If you follow the link to the original it says:
Employees of the hotel cheer to members of Japan's delegation as they leave their hotel in Centurion, South Africa, Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Japan leaves South Africa after being defeated by Paraguay 5-3 on penalties Tuesday, after a 0-0 draw in their round of 16 World Cup soccer match.

Well then... Holland vs. Brazil today. I have to say I'm not optimistic, but on the upside I get to drink beer and watch the game while on duty. Picture a mess hall full of Dutchmen wearing identical orange company shirts swilling lager and shouting at a projector screen while they should be working :p

We are having some Canadians over from HQ and their eyes nearly fell out of their head at the sight of this spectacle last monday... so I handed each of them a cold Heineken.

Good times!

Strange Canucks to be surprised over something like that...back in my school days we were excused from class and sent to the gym to watch the Montreal Expos play the LA Dodgers in the National League finals.

Holy crap Mike, I remember that as well. And then that prick Rick Monday hit the home run off of Steve Rodgers and it marked the end of the Expos. If they had won that series, who knows they could have gone on to win the World Series and still be playing in the hell hole called the Olympic stadium.

Brazil is damn dirty. They should have had another yellow, but luckily the Netherlands scored, but what happened to "the beautiful game". Kick their asses out Japanese ref!!!

Red card for Brazil. I love it. But they can still tie it up. This will be a tense last 20 minutes.

I love how the Brazilians started out dirty and aggressive and we still fucking beat them... holy shit that 2nd half! Brazil just fucking crumbled and fell. I've never been this tense during a football game... If you'll excuse me I will now go and have a heart attack.

That red card was seriously deserved too. Melo tripped, kicked, and then stomped on the Dutch player! What the hell was he thinking!? Hopefully he gets a multi game suspension for it on top of the red card.
