Newsweek!

From the quote I just assumed it was The Onion. Driverless cars criss-crossing the city ... artificial meteor showers ... and all by 2020. That's only four years away. Rotsa ruck.

I fail to see any of this fabled excitement.

I wonder where they will install the Olympic flame on the hydrogen powered transport vehicles.

I'm much more excited about not being permitted to retweet tweets by athletes, or to tweet words such as "Tokyo," "2020," "Bronze" or "Summer," or to tweet to congratulate an athlete for their performance.

A lot of the older guys (50+) I drink with in shitamachi were pretty excited about it when Tokyo won and they're still wearing their Tokyo 2020 lapel pins.

At first I thought this was an April Fool's in poor taste.

... died after a heart attack. She was 65.
She contracted bronchitis while in Miami earlier this week and died in hospital this morning, her company said.

A hospital death? Nah. Obviously, it was a Yakuza hit. :???:

I see far less opposition to it than in Vancouver, esp. the principled and or financial opposition, and at least the same level of cheerleader excitement, pride and anticipation. Which makes sense: they're Japanese, and Japanese like that stuff.

Shocking, or at least sad about the toilet bowl stadium designer dame. 65 is not young, but it isn't ancient. RIP. Rather convenient, as Taro said, but I will wait for word from Benjamin Fulford before forming any conclusions.

If the logo has to refer to how typically Japanese or Tokyo it is, C is a winner all the way...the logo is giving the funny rainbow a kancho.

The original fee for the design was not very high, more a token payment. The prestige was what mattered.

Don't know about the fee for the new designs, however I do know a lot of professional designers and none of them would go close to this job.

I find those cute. Reminds me strongly of one of my "How to beginner CorelDraw" books from the 1990ies. So it looks like Japan is slowly catching up with current times and less stuck in the 1960ies?

Thank you for providing a perfect example of why racism works against everyone's best interests. Including the best interests of the racist. It's idiotic to vote for an inferior design because you think it will annoy someone else. It's YOUR logo not Korea's, choose the one you think is the best you twat.

None are very impressive at all - but then look at London's logo - I'm not criticising too much. A is just appalling, B looks derivative, Variations on C are commonly seen around here and are also derivative. Was it Matisse who did it right? Anyway, that figure isn't right at all. D is well gay.

The Cadillac (aka the best of a bad bunch) IMO is B.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I would have said Adobe Illustrator...

A and D for how to automate repetitive tasks with macros...

B for how to reuse shapes and patterns

C for freehand drawing under duress or alcohol induced coma.

How has some sort of Olympic colored sakura design not been proposed? You know the locals would eat that shit up and it would look a million times better than anything I've seen yet. (and not be subject to the usual plagiarism)

Japan’s open Olympic logo selection process wins disapproval from designers

Professional designers are sneering at the four short-listed logos for the 2020 Olympics, saying soliciting proposals from the public resulted in designs of low artistic quality.

The designs were chosen from almost 15,000 submitted in an open competition after a logo by Kenjiro Sano was pulled in September amid accusations of plagiarism.

The Tokyo 2020 Emblems Selection Committee is now accepting votes in favor of one of the four designs online or on a postcard until Sunday. The team will then submit its selection to the Tokyo 2020 board on April 25.

An online survey by The Japan Times found that readers favor Design B, closely followed by Design D. The two others lagged far behind in the poll, conducted over several days to Wednesday.

Asking ordinary people for their ideas rankles with some professionals.

“Public submission seems more fair than a designer or agency picked by an elite, but the overall result will probably lack quality,” said Benjamin Thomas of Tokyo-based design studio Bento Graphics. Thomas added, the four short-listed proposals fail to “immediately visually explain their concept.”

Tokyo-based designer Ian Lynam of Ian Lynam Design said the four pairs of logos are “unprofessional in terms of structure, form and execution. They are more akin to cartoons or caricatures of logos than actual logos.” He said the committee should have hired a design studio.

More

Agree with the opinions about the amateur designs, but as for the more professional designers, we know how that worked out...
