Actually, "START YOUR IMPOSSIBLE" sort of makes sense when that engrish slogan is seen as part of Toyota 's global campaign called "MOBILITY FOR ALL."

Engrish on top of Engrish...I wonder how the non FG visitors will interpret it.

I asked some locals last night and the consensus among them was probably initially intended to be something like "begin your potential" than got fucked to "start your possible" and further fucked to "start your impossible." At the end of the day, it's just more confusing and meaningless J-fucked "catch copy" :wall:

You would think that somebody in all of Toyota might notice that putting the words "START" with "IMPOSSIBLE" as a slogan on the side of their cars is not very smart, duh.

It got you talking about it, which is a marketing success using some measurements.

I've just had a coffee from a self service espresso machine with a touch screen interface, which runs an animated commercial for Mazda while your coffee is brewing. I do wonder how many people decided that yes, they would buy a Mazda next time they replace their car, based on what a coffee machine told them (and how many go on to associate Mazda with "just OK" coffee).

Indeed, their goalposts for success are probably about how it's implemented, not how confused everyone is by it. (and so far, I've yet to meet a local that understands it either) At least Zoom Zoom! is catchy and is associated with cars...

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/feb/13/first-doping-case-of-2018-winter-olympics-sees-japanese-athlete-sent-home

The Japanese short track speed skater Kei Saito has protested his innocence after becoming the first athlete at the Winter Olympics to be suspended for a positive drugs test.

The news was announced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, who said that the 21-year-old voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension after an out-of-competition test showed signs of acetalozamide, which can be a masking agent and is used as a diuretic.

Seeing Hamamatsu's "Access to your success" slogan always got a smile out of me and a mental "Thanks, but I'll pass."

I doubt that Hamamatsu, as home of Suzuki, will ever get access to the success of a man who prefers a Mitsubishi Minica for all occasions.

The Hamamatsu slogan is a riff on the tradition of Hamamatsu castle being a shortcut to rising up the feudal ranks. ... If the 17 years spent there by Tokugawa Ieyasu can be regarded as a shortcut ...

I have a soft spot for Suzuki, the shacho used to forbid any loan words in presentations, one of our hapless strategic planners went all the way down there from Tokyo with a presentation document with a title page that said "ストラテジー”

the shacho said "帰れ!"

There are two brands of pianos made in Hamamatsu, and you chose the correct one.

How did you know?

Hmm, let me guess...

A recorder... Nope

A oboe... Nope

A piccolo... Saahh, probably not

A clarinet... Yep, that should be the one!

Are you saying that I wouldn't have the embouchure for an oboe? Insufficient in-mouth humidity to keep two reeds supple and vibrating?

You are correct. It was a licorice stick.

Not so much about the 2020 Olympics, but more about these 2018 games, why do the Japanese announcers make the games more about themselves than the athletes? Why do we have to see their reaction to the success or defeat of the athletes. In the west they often show the family members or husband or wife, but not here. Who cares about Nobunaga crying because the stupid announcer said , he helped Hanyu win gold. I am sick of these cheese-ball announcers and how they want all the spotlight on themselves, not the competition. And I must say, the coverage has been pretty crap, not a lot of coverage of sports, no repeats of things people may have missed unless it is the men's figure skating which we will see at least 1638 times in the next few days!

Yep, it's a bit queer that they cover the men's figure skating so much.

And what pisses me off most is that there is no coverage of speed skating on NHK, even though Japanese skaters are quite successful this year. (Well they should be, they went to the Netherlands for training)

I just came across this thread half an hour ago, and managed to get the Hola VPN installed and watched the last five minutes of the game (saw Canada score the 4th goal  ). Now I can enjoy seeing some real coverage of the Olympics, not just 24/7 J figure skating...
BTW - six members of the Korean hockey team are Canadian.
