Aussies face Rommel . . . again

Postby kurohinge1 » Thu Jun 08, 2006 12:30 pm

As part of the allied effort, the Aussies beat Rommel in North Africa over 60 years ago. They now face Rommel again in Germany on Monday . . .

This is the Japanese team's lucky charm/secret weapon. His win rate is 18-0.

The Japanese team has yet to lose a match when Rommel the daschund - named after Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (aka "The Desert Fox") - has been around during the match build-up.

. . . The rumour is that Japan's coach Zico even keeps a picture of Rommel (the dog) in his breast pocket when the dog has been unable to travel to matches . . . more

There's more about Rommel here: Japan's secret weapon hits the woof-work

Or, stating things more accurately, "as part of the Allied effort, the Ozzies got their asses kicked all the way from Tobruk to El Alamein, until Montgomery and the Brits came and saved their pathetic asses."

I shot some video of this and other dogs before a WC2002 Japan friendly at the Nat. Stadium.
The owners had their dogs all decked out in Japan uniforms, they were really cute. Of all the crowd shots I took the pics of the dogs were the pics that got used the most.

After seeing the footage the guy I shot for then came out with a video of dogs dressed in doggie-sized WC2002 team kits.

My guess is that 'Rommel' is like 'Lassie' or 'Flipper' where they have about 50 stand-ins. Rommel didn't lose that game, that dog was Stalin.;)
