Japanese horses take 1,2 in the Melbourne Cup

Postby ichigo partygirl » Tue Nov 07, 2006 1:13 pm

Delta Blues has won the Melbourne Cup, pipping Pop Rock at the post in a photo finish.

The two Japanese horses stormed home in a thrilling finish to the 3200 metre race, which carries a first prize of $3,000,000 and a second prize of $750,000.

Maybe Better came third and Zipping fourth.

Delta Blues, ridden by Yasunari Iwata and trained by Katsuhiko Sumii, was carrying 56kg.

Jockey Iwata said: "I'm very happy. He is the biggest winner ever."

Before the race at 3pm, Tawqeet was listed as the $5.30 favourite in NSW and $5.40 favourite in Victoria, Pop Rock was at $7.40 in NSW but had dropped remarkably to $6 in Victoria, while Yeats moved back out to $7.60 and $7.40 in the two states.

And here's the trainer of both horses:

Not a bad trip "down under" for Sumii-san.

We Yanks work for a living. Don't have time to slop up the pints like the Aussies! B the B did call me before hand, but there were those that had to arrange quarantine to get them out of Aborigine country fast, so that unset Aussies didn't eat both horses at the pub. No rest for the wicked, which of course, I qualify for on both counts.

I seem to remember that the JRA donated tickets to this weekend's meet. You could have come as a sponsor/representative. It was a great day for Japanese racing.

BTW it was more about the sipping of good aussie shiraz rather than slopping pints. The food was great as well - but it was a fairly high cost for the event so it was expected to be posh. I even wore a hat!!!

I think the hat thing is a bit posh too,

and it's good manners to take them off while indoors.

Great story

Postby Marvin Feltcher » Wed Nov 08, 2006 11:08 pm

I really loved this story in today's Melbourne Herald-Sun. The columnist, Ron Reed, is top class and has long been a big advocate of Japan and Australia becoming closer on the sporting field. Australia needs more guys like this.
