IndyCar Sees First Female Winner In Japan

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Apr 20, 2008 5:43 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]AP: Danica Patrick makes IndyCar history by winning Japan 300
Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar history Sunday, taking the Indy Japan 300 after the top contenders were forced to pit for fuel in the final laps. Patrick finished 5.8594 seconds ahead of pole-sitter Helio Castroneves on the 1.5-mile Twin Ring Motegi oval after leader Scott Dixon pitted with five laps left and Dan Wheldon and Tony Kanaan came in a lap later. "It's a long time coming. Finally," Patrick said. "It was a fuel strategy race, but my team called it perfectly for me. I knew I was on the same strategy as Helio and when I passed him for the lead, I couldn't believe it. This is fabulous." The 26-year-old Patrick won in her 50th career IndyCar start, taking the lead from Castroneves on the 198th lap in the 200-lap race...more...

The Indy cars were split into two leagues for fourteen years, Indy Racing League and Champ Cars. Danica was rumored last year to be in talks to go to NASCAR. She's the brightest star in that racing league. I'm not gonna' say the fix was in but IRL might have folded without her.

I was just listening to live talk radio from the US, naziFox Sports Radio (Sports Talk), and the commentators are all whining about how she won a gas mileage gamble---she didn't out-drive the rest of the field, she out-thought 'em.Image

Yeah, I hate when people give the weight/strategy argument. Nobody demeans a strategic win by a male. Also, her weight advantage is just that, a physical advantage, which all atheletes rely on to excel in a particular field, whether it's height, lung-capacity, or plain-old inherent mental ability.

Yeah, I saw a bunch of fat NASCAR rednecks whining about her weight advantage on the CBS news tonight. I wanted to reach right through the screen, grab them by the neck, and shake them while yelling "you know there are 100 lb MEN too, why aren't they the top Indy drivers?" It's poorly disguised sexism.
I note that the current season's #1 ranked driver, Helio Castroneves, weighs 147 lbs, #2, Scott Dixon, weighs 150 lbs.
