Italian news reports are quoting a San Marino track doctor as saying Japanese motorcyclist Shoya Tomizawa has died of injuries suffered in an accident during the Moto2 race on the San Marino Grand Prix track.

Tomizawa lost control of his motorcycle and was hit by two other riders at full speed during the race. He was flown by helicopter to one hospital and then to the Riccione hospital on the Adriatic coast.

ANSA quoted track doctor Claudio Costa as saying that Tomizawa died at 2:20 p.m. (1220 GMT) at the hospital.

Riccione hospital emergency says it is not authorized to give out information about Tomizawa.

A couple of other Japanese racers have died in accidents, too. During a race in 1993 Daijiro Kato hit a wall and died. It was off the track, but Norifumi Abe was hit and killed by a truck while riding a scooter in 1997.
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

There's a reason why doctors call bikers "organ donors"...

:-(

But on a side note, between dying of old age totally wasted and shitting in diapers or dying in an awesum fireball after a motorbike crash... I'd rather go for the bike...

What kind of a fucking limp dick statement is this? He thinks it's "disappointing." I wonder if he can imagine just how disappointed Tomizawa might be?

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

It should be obvious that these guys are putting their life on the line every time they race, but somehow the reality of someone actually dying while engaged in their sport is always a shock. Like the luge competitor who died in practice at the last winter olympics.

It's like "huh? how can that happen?"

Biggest trouble might now be the difference between motorbike and car race.

For bikes, safety didn't improve much for the last 50 years...

For formula 1... well remember when sex was safe and racing was dangerous ? long ago indeed... Now they even crash on purpose during some race for preventing an oponent taking too much points knowing that they certainly won't get hurt.
