Japanese Player in NHL Developmental Camp

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Of the almost 50 players that attended the New York Islanders' developmental camp last week, there was one invitee that really stood out -- for geographic reasons.

Mei Ushu, a 20-year old, 6-foot, 196-pound defenseman from Japan started playing hockey when he was seven years old after friends got him into it. Even with the young start he didn't expect to be playing at age 20, Ushu said through his interpreter, Taka Shirai.

In those 13 years since taking up the sport, Ushu has quickly risen up the ranks of the growing hockey culture in Japan. Currently playing for Waseda University in Shinjuko, Tokyo, Ushu has played for Japan's U-18 and U-20 National teams, captaining the latter.

The connection between the Islanders and Ushu is through Shirai, who used to intern with the team. He keeps in contact with Islanders GM Garth Snow and arranged for Ushu to participate in this year's development camp. At last year's developmental camp, Kotaro Yamada represented Japan as an invitee.

more. . .

He's a pretty big boy, but it remains to be seen if he can handle the physical nature of the North American game

Methinks there is enormous demand for development camps across all of Japan, and not necessarily for ice hockey....

Big? Maybe for Japan, but for North America, not so much (Bigger, faster, stronger and heavier)
The real question is - can he fight?

And that what was I meant -- for Japan. Not all that many guys walking around Shibuya that are 6-foot, 196-pound defenseman. Hope he wears a mouthguard or he might find out why so many North American hockey players need dental work.

Being a Nip I'm sure he already needs more dental work than your average NHL player.

I don't know Mei (insert umeshu joke here) but some of his Waseda teammates practice with our NTT team pretty regularly. If he has half the dedication as they do, he'll do alright. Rink rats can't seem to get enough of ice time. Overall the skill level here can't compare with North America and Europe but there are many skilled players here and there.

Teeth? Japan? haha, oddly enough they just instated a rule here that requires mouthpieces. I had been wearing one all along but from the reactions of my teammates, apparently most weren't and didn't like the idea of wearing them. Some had to get a dentist to fit custom pieces for their garigari chompers....but any reason to get them to the dentist is probably good.

We're playing (hopefully murdering) Mitsubishi tonight...3 game winning streak so far. I hope we take the Tokyo area, looking forward to nationals in Hokkaido! (and probably getting murdered there by a tomokoroshi-fed Hokkaido team)
