Keyboard - JIS vs. US?

Postby B Gallagher » Mon Aug 15, 2005 1:52 pm

Hey all,
I'm gunna pick up a PowerBook when I'm in Japan. It gives me the option of either having a US-style keyboard, or a Japanese-style keyboard (US vs. JIS).
Which do you think would be better? :o Doing a BAHons in Japanese and have used them enough in the past to have a reasonable idea of where everything is (@, anyone?), so to me the Japanese-style one seems like a better idea.. was just wondering what others though.

Thanks. :D

what is your primary language of use? OS? If you are using primarily Japanese with Japanese OS, then a Japanese keyboard might be the way to go.

If it is with English and and ENglish OS, then I'd use an US-Eng keyboard.

Get the US keyboard. The Japanese layout is very annoying.

BTW, I did it again. I'm typing this from my brand new Powerbook. And of course now there are rumors that new faster Powerbooks will be announced in September.

Dammit.

It's always gunna happen. As it is, the PB you have seems to me to be a pretty wicked machine. I'm only waiting till October as I can get a PB for about 240,000 yen (approx) in Japan with student discount, whereas it'd be at least another 80,000 Yen extra (just using a common currency) if I bought it in NZ.

I think I'll stick with the US layout. Like you all said, I know it already. :) Thanks for the advice.

Now.. I have to try and teach myself Dvorak...

Yeah, there's an old saying, "there are two types of computers,: unreleased, and obsolete." So anything you buy is basically obsolete the moment it's released. I was just hoping it wouldn't be superceded quite so soon. But it was a safe bet anyway, despite some rumors they might manage to ship a 2Ghz G4, it is more likely to be a 1.7Ghz G4, which is only slightly faster than my 1.67Ghz. I figured Apple wouldn't be able to ship anything that would leave my 1.67 in the dust, I might be right.

Anyway, it could be worse. I bought an 8100/110 a long time ago, shipment was delayed by months and months, and the price actually dropped $300 before I took delivery. I could not get Apple to refund the price difference.
