Looking for a Bluetooth/USB Bridge

Postby FG Lurker » Sun Dec 10, 2006 12:19 pm

As mentioned previously I have recently bought a MacBook Pro. Sweet machine but sadly no docking station option.

The lack of docking station has pushed me into a search for Bluetooth peripherals, particularly a keyboard and mouse. Mice are no problem. Keyboards on the other hand...

What I want is a Bluetooth natural keyboard for the Mac...I haven't been able to find such a beast in either English or Japanese.

This got me wondering...Doesn't anyone make a Bluetooth/USB bridge? You could plug in a few USB devices and it would then connect to the Mac via Bluetooth. Some software on the Mac side would likely be required, especially if multiple devices were connected to one bridge. It seems like a good idea, but I can't find one.

If anyone knows of a Bluetooth natural keyboard for Mac or a Bluetooth/USB bridge I would live to hear about it!

Not sure about a bridge, but the Apple Wireless Keyboards are Bluetooth:
The Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Wireless Mouse use Bluetooth technology to free you and your Mac from the physical restraints of tethering cables and crowded peripheral ports. - http://www.apple.com/bluetooth/

I've been using the apple wireless keyboard for about two years and I think its great...good key feel, noisy enough to know when you've pressed a key, battery life is pretty good...I have to replace the batteries (4 AAs) about every six months...and thats with a fair bit of daily use. The only minor issue is that it takes a few seconds for bluetooth device handshaking to take place when you boot up, so if you have a passworded log in, takes a about 6-10 seconds longer to get to your desktop.

As for the mouse, there is an Apple bluetooth mouse, but it is the stupid one button mouse style. Most other wireless mice are radio frequency based, but I think that Logitech has recently come out with bluetooth one, although its pretty pricey ($80-ish) if I remember correctly.

Think you need this:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=T6295ZM/A

Connect it to a powered USB.
Configure it all in the System Prefs > Bluetooth > Paired Devices

How to set it up:

Hope that helps.

Actually, what I'm looking for does the same thing, but in the opposite way.

I have Bluetooth in my MacBook Pro. What I would like is a way to connect USB devices (specifically "human interface devices" -- kb and mouse) over a bluetooth connection.

Basically I hate plugging and unplugging wires, and doing it a couple of times a day can result in broken USB ports after a couple of years.

It doesn't look like such a thing exists though, and I can't find a Bluetooth natural keyboard with a Mac layout either. I'll probably end up buying two Apple bluetooth keyboards and a couple of bluetooth mice as well, although not the Apple mouse, those things suck. Apple makes such great stuff, wtf can't they make a decent mouse?
