old dos apps

Postby james » Sat Oct 29, 2011 5:09 pm

does anyone here have any experience fixing the keyboard layout for old dos apps on pcs running winxp (english) with an accursed 109 key japanese keyboard?

anyone who's familiar with this setup / scenario will know that when shelling to dos / command prompt, you'll get the standard keyboard layout resulting in mismatched mappings - things like shift-2 giving you an "@" sign instead of quotes - since that's where it's located on a standard us keyboard; square brackets, colon, parenthesis, asterisk etc all in the standard location but not matching what is visible to the user on the japanese keyboard itself.

i've been trying to fix this by editing c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt and config.nt but have not been having much luck.

any useful input (pun intended) would be welcome.

yeah, that's what i've been playing with but there seems to be a problem somewhere between the chair and keyboard ;)

playing with dosbox now. i won't let me go full screen, but sound support seems to be much better for what i'm doing and it looks like there's a key mapper.

edit: got fullscreen working. looking at keyboard mappings now.
