The Much Maligned Magic Mouse

Postby Yokohammer » Sat Nov 30, 2013 8:58 am

So I bought an Apple Magic Mouse yesterday, to use with my Mini.

Seemed like a good idea, since it sort of combines mouse and trackpad functions, I prefer using a mouse to a trackpad, and I really don't like the idea of having a honking great Magic Trackpad parked on my desk.

I had been using a pretty standard Logicool M555b bluetooth mouse with my Mac Mini, which was OK, but it was starting to skip a little. And without any trackpad functionality I was using keyboard shortcuts for many of the functions that are more expediently handled by trackpad gestures. So, knowing that the Magic Mouse got a pretty bad rap when it was first released in 2009, I went ahead and bought one anyway.

And ... so far I'm loving it. Can't really see why people didn't like it at all. Maybe the OS has evolved to make better use of it, or something, but it sure works nicely for me. JPY 7,200 isn't exactly going to break the bank either (I spent more on Takarakuji tickets right after buying the MM).

So far, so good.

I have a magic mouse and I mostly love it.

The only issue I have is sometimes gestures that I don't mean sometimes do some funky things like show all windows or move to the launchpad screen but that is just my problems for not keeping my other fingers out of the way when scrolling.

In spite of my rather large digits, I haven't encountered that problem.

It took me a little while to figure out where to use a one-finger or two-finger swipe (cue locker room humour), but all is well and I'm quite happy with it. One of those slap forehead and think " why didn't i do this sooner" types of things.

Is there a separate setting for men and women?

I can imagine men have more dexterous fingers, while women are more skillful with their hands...

According to movies national geographic documentaries that I saw, It's the opposite, men are excellent at hand to gland combat while wimmin are more subtle for fingering the opponent... But they wuz shown to be both equally qualified in the use of their tongs...

(Didn't get the memo aboot magic mouse being a black-duck-swan thing, got one and the magic trackpad... But use logitech trackballs instead... Less motion, more akshiun... But no gestures though...)

I gave up on my Magic Mouse that magically interprets my non-gestures like sneezing as "gestures". Grrr.
I use a standard 3-button trackwheel Electom mouse without the nasty, battery-eating habits of Bluetooth--For the same reason I use a top-the-line, full-sized, clacky Electom USB keyboard rather than the svelte, sexy, wireless keyboard that came with Mac.

Haww!

I love the reliability and never-need-to-change-batteries simplicity of a wired mouse, but I hate having wires running around my desk even more, so wireless it is.

Still loving the Magic Mouse, and no annoying unintentional gestures thus far.
(You guys do know that you can individually turn gestures on or off via the System Preferences Mouse panel, don't you ...).

Yes but I like to use them... I just don't like it when a stray or lazy digit sets the gesture off without my meaning to - usually to show all windows etc.

BTW just got a new quad core Mac mini the other day. My 6 year old one died an ugly death but the new one is like driving a precision sports car after a clunky VW beetle.

The current Mac Minis are amazing little computers. Mine is a 2.3 GHz Core i7 (that I stuffed the full 16 GB of RAM in), and it's ... yeah, a precision sports car (nice analogy) compared to the 2009 Macbook Pro that preceded it. I have a 13" Macbook Air for road use as well, but that's a different animal altogether because it's all SSD.

Notice the difference with USB 3.0 by the way? Dayum that's fast!
Not even sure that Thunderbolt is even necessary.
