ISP connection.

Postby simplebeing » Thu May 01, 2014 10:20 pm

Hi all

First of all thanks for adding me tentacleofdoom.

I have recently moved to Fukuoka from Australia with my family(Japanese wife). We have just got out first apartment(mezaneto) it's brand new so we will be the first tennants in it. It comes with cs?? TV connection. I want to know how to go about getting a internet connection. I'm living about 1.5 hour away from main Fukuoka city in a town called shindenbaru. Is there a website where I can check what all services (ISP) are available to my specific address. Is it better just to get a wifi hotspot? Or proper line adsl or the likes?

Just looking to switch mine at the moment - see thread just above. Just wander into any electrical shop and show the merest flicker of interest. You will be besieged by salesmen. You will also be be deluged with information and options. It's as confusing as an elephants nest crossed with a spaghetti junction riddled with pointless intricacy.

Try to choose a fairly quiet time and try not to show too much interest. Try drifting away a bit and watch their offers improve.

ISP connection.

Thanks for the reply but I'm still confused as to what is the norm here. How much of ones precious yen one is supposed to part with to get a decent connection with a decent download quota?

It's hard to say. It gets bundled in a telephone line and TV and then there are varying installation costs, TV packages, cashbacks, routers, wifi hotspot access, hardware giveaways and even, I kid you not, access to cheap vegetables and lots more. Madness.

If it helps I pay about 8k a month for internet/cable TV including movies and sports/phone line. There isn't any declared download limit. I have heard of people being written to if they download a ridiculous amount or pirate copies of the latest Hollywood must see. I'm just about to switch and can probably cut that by 2k or so at the cost of losing channels but with the benefit of very fast internet, a "free" tablet, wifi hotspot access, a better phone line and multiple TVs.

Realistically, a fibre connection with no extras will be around 5,000 yen a month. Dunno about DSL if it's available, might be cheaper but with less bandwidth. You might be able to get a good deal in combination with a mobile phone contract. Cable might also be a cheaper option if available. Dunno what you mean with "wifi hotspot" - they're generally available in cafes, stations and the like, if you get lucky and have a strong signal you might be able to sign up for a few hundred yen a month, but I wouldn't bet on it. Mobile internet (current TLA: LTE) won't be much cheaper than fibre.

IIRC my fibre contract (Flets/OCN) said something about a 30GB monthly limit, though I've never had any issues (I do take care to source any locally produced content from Tsutaya for the Mrs., and my taste in films is pretty eclectic anyway).

My requirement is a phone line/fax and internet. I don't need cable tv As I have cs already at home. I haven't checked it out as I'm moving in 10 days but if it is anything like Australia I might have activate the cable(I presume cs tv stands for cable tv)

Gotcha. At the moment my ISP is a small local cable TV company. You might well find the cable TV company in your apartment offers an internet service and that may be the cheapest and easiest thing to do. For starters anyway.

I am switching to Yahoo as the ISP with NTT providing cabling/installation/telephone and TV. Somehow Softbank are involved as are Yamada Denki as the place all this is being agreed and administered. We have to buy something from Yamada to get the cashback, in theory at least. As it turned out the microwave we wanted was out of stock and that condition was waived.

It's difficult to compare products on a like for like basis and that is no accident. Quite a few things are like that here.

I've had really bad experience with Yahoo in Nagoya.
Was a DSL, internet could shut for days during rainseason. (Probably the building wiring fault). And MTU bullshit in my router.
Maybe they are better on fiber in a real house...

It's hard to say (impossible really) which one of the 25 providers will be the best for in Beyond-Bumfuck Shindenbaru. Talk with your neighbors to find out what is good in your area. It could be that the cheap supplier*, Softbank, is too slow and OCN fiber will be MUCH better even though it costs about 1,000 yen more a month.

CS TV stands for Communication Satellite TV, so no Internet.
CS is gonna cost to get a real package with the good channels (I spend 3~5,000yen/m depending on whether I add a sports package).

*Yeah, yeah, I know I am conflating the ISP with the separate
company providing cabling/installation/telephone. Everything
is bundled in "deals" which is confusing (on purpose).

Asahinet is a reasonable ISP, with support in god's language if you don't read hieroglyphics.

There is an offer using AU KDDI at the moment, with free landline thrown in for 30 months, and cheap after that.

It's the GIGA value thingy, fecking fast too.

Are you trying to make a funny of my time with Jizz'elle ? (*)

Yeah, them kids back home came with this wonderfully creative name... Original being of course Giselle a name that your grandmother would find dated, and splitting it Jizz (universal) Elle (she) as a new fap metaphor...

OP, I actually live not far from Shindenbaru stn. (even more BFE), and I am currently using NTT for my landline and TV, with Plala as my ISP.
However, as my mobile phone is with AU, I'll probably switch everything over to that soon, and get the whole package deal which will be cheapest (as indicated above).

Cheers guys for the help.
I'm better informed now. I have a Japanese wife but to be honest, this particular stuff is her forte.
