Google go Goggle on Mozilla in Japakneezy

Postby kurogane » Fri Nov 07, 2014 1:54 pm

Hey,
As a confirmed technomagnon I have decided to rely on the assembled sages to help with a problem I am having. I am using Mozilla Firefox as a browser and quite like it but when I go to do a Google search in Japanese script I get this weird double Moji Bake sort of thing where the first term entered comes out twice, so that I have to go back and edit it to get a proper Kanji result. So, my questions:

is this a Firefox thing, or a Google while on Firefox thing?
am I simply too lazy and stupid to use computers properly, and if yes, what are my options?

Thanks in advance, and all and any MYHOMOs are most welcome.

I can not reproduce your issue here. Screen shots please. Otherwise, fiddling around with your character encoding in the view menu might solve your problem.

Are you using the English version of Firefox? I haven't used it in awhile but one of the reasons I stopped is it sometimes doesn't (or at least didn't) handle Japanese language too well. I've never had similar issues with Explorer or Chrome.

CHROME FTW! I gave up on Firefox a few years back.

Currently using an English language installation of Firefox on Linux Ubuntu, and a Japanese language installation of Firefox on Windows 7, and I do not see language issues on either. Character encoding set to auto detect Japanese, otherwise Unicode.

Thanks guys. I have oly recently switched to Firefox, so switching again to Chrome seems a bit much for now. I will look into the code thingy.

BTW, the last time I made a successful screen shot was the first time I saw the Miko Lee Gangland production of Life at The Top.

I have an English version Firefox running under Windows 7, and have no problems with Japanese web pages.

I think the problem Kurogane is referring to occurs when inputting something in the Google search field, when Google tries to auto-complete various suggestions. I had a similar problem issue at one point when the first Japanese character of whatever I was inputting would always end up as hiragana and never get converted. I put it down to increasing Google suckage.

It just so happens that I never ever use the Google webpage for searches, but instead use the search field on the upper right of the browser window. I wonder if this makes a difference. Disabling autocomplete might also offer a solution. To be frank, autocomplete is a solution looking for a problem.

Yeah, it's not quite that. It's that the first few characters of any given search either get repeated or end up as Roman

so........いしがき石垣島。。。。or.........iしがき。。。。。。。。。

Wagyl,

The little search field works. Problem solved for now. :biggrin2:

Russell,
Sounds like we have similar systems, but it's not the web pages themselves but the input of search terms when Googling from the main middle box at Google.ca (or whatever).

Anyways, that will work for now. Thanks to all, and esp. wagyl.

Kurogane, searching in Japanese at the U.S. Google page is also without problems here.

If you are doing something that drastic, the Japanese page might be a more reliable choice.

Nice part of the prefecture. If you do layover in Naha, how about some Buds in the park behind the microbrewery on Kokusai Street? :cool2:

post mortem and suggested solution

Postby kurogane » Tue Dec 09, 2014 4:35 pm

So, I finally seemed to have figured it out. I switched the Japanese character encoding in Firefox to EUC-JP (WTF that is) and the random strays have disappeared when I use the Google home page big box.

And there it is. Do I get the Technomagnon Done Good Award? :spin:

Maybe. Be aware that Mozilla are no longer suckling on the Google teat and at some upgrade in the future they might set the default search engine to Yahoo! This will all be complicated with Yahoo! Japan being a different entity to Yahoo! the rest of the world, so who knows how it will be implemented. You are of course always at liberty to change the search engine settings back to Google (other search engine providers are available), just be aware that there may be an unexpected change.

Thanks for that wagyl. BTW, it was all a false alarm. Switching the encodificatoinalities didn't fix it after all. That must have been a fluke.

Back to the little box up top like you suggested.

Just testing on this machine, running on Windows 7, this Firefox is a Japanese language installation, as is the whole computer (i.e., menus are in Japanese): I don't have your extraneous character issue if I try the Firefox Start Page. But I also cannot change the character encoding when I am on that start page anyway, the menu option is greyed out. Otherwise, the character encoding here is Unicode, and 自動判別 Automatic Discrimination?? is on Japanese.

To answer the other question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Unix_Code#EUC-JP might help you, and if it doesn't, no explanation will satisfy you.

Thanks Wags. I'll take a look at that.

But at least for now I have the little box if needed. Other than that I quite like Firefox, whereas I found Chrome a royal pain.
