New-ish media unblocker for Hulu, Pandora, et al

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Jan 24, 2013 11:43 am

My crappy "HMA Pro VPN" is so sloooow that I was digging around for better alternatives to watch US Hulu and BBC here in Japan. I found that this new unblocker called Hola that lets me use my NTT Fibre at full-throttle, 150Mb/s without any slowing and very little latency.

Sweet: Hola lets you use Hulu, Pandora, Netflix, CBS, Fox, BBC iPlayer TV, and iTV from any country
thenextweb.com
Hola is a new service let you access videos on Hulu, Pandora, Netflix, CBS, Fox, BBC iPlayer TV, and iTV from any bumfuck country. To try it out, download the extension for Google Chrome or the add-on for Mozilla Firefox. Windows users who aren’t using either of those browsers can download the standalone client, which offers a bit more features.
There is also a service called Media Hint that lets you use Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, and Rdio from any country.

Hulu Japan (via Apple TV) is so craptacular it is a complete joke.

So correct me if I wrong, this will allow you to create and use a US account for Netflix etc. Do you need a US credit card or address to do this?

Hulu has premium content but most the stuff is free in America so you probably won't need a credit card. Not sure about an address, etc. though. Of course, if they don't require a CC, you could just use any old address. For other companies that do charge my guess is you probably do need a US CC but that's just a guess.

Just when I was partially in the mood to try to unbrick it...

Am thinking of jailbreaking mine to allow me to play my stash of non-itunes based movies from my own computer to my TV.

VLC is starting to piss me off.

We run ours via the stereo.

What sort of files are you playing? Could it be them rather than the player?

This is why I wanted to jailbreak the AppleTV to put on the Plex player. But I guess I could just do it like I do now with the VLC - which is run the TV as a second "monitor" for the MacMini. Tis an older MacMini which is why I can't use AirPlay.

Might be worth getting a newer one as the DVD drive is dead etc.

Even worse because I have no idea what the issue is. So far as I can tell it's totally inconsistent. Sometimes there is sound, sometimes it sounds like McTojo when a girl looks his general direction.

It also works with Firefox on non-Windows platforms.

8-) Right now I'm watching the BBC's "Kangaroo Dundee" on the BBC iPlayer from a Japanese IP address using Hola + Chrome 24.0 and Mac OS10.6.8, but YMMV.

I read it wrong the first time. I make most of my posts while working so I'm only half paying attention to FG and my job. I read it as only works if you're using Chrome and a non-Window platform.

In no particular order: Firefox, Seamonkey, Safari, Opera, Camino, also Chromium.

Call me paranoid, but I prefer to limit certain kinds of browsing activity to certain browsers/browser profiles, for reasons such as making it difficult for Google to track my web usage in one neat package (and so it doesn't force me to reconcile different accounts) and to prevent whoopsies such as clicking the "like" button on a cat juggling porn page and sharing that to all the world on Facebook (which I also use very sparingly with two accounts, one for acquantainces, one for colleagues).

Probably not paranoid enough, mind.

I use Chrome at work but I use Firefox at home because for some reason my 7 year old laptop that's on it's last leg doesn't like Chrome. I do still have to use Explorer sometime because there are still plenty of websites that are only optimized for it.
