Core 2 Duo to i3? You'll need a new motherboard.

And I bet the motherboard is DDR2.

thanks yanpa... yes it would be DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-8500, DDR2 (ECC)
(google...)

so.. does is the graphics card compatible and in your opinion, is it worth JPY2,000 (for me it is cheap as hell... but difference on SC2, league of legends?)

edit:
That and I would need to get a new power supply, but for the price of the card, not bad

Maybe worth a try, but graphics cards are kind of outside my range of competence.

OK, so the graphics card works no problem and i got a power supply but the connecter didn't match my mobo :(

still OK though.

So I want to upgrade my MoBo for the CPU I had mentioned above, so I would need a FCLGA-1156 cpu socket.

Upgrading my Dell T3400 with a new MoBo is difficult to find if the mobo will fit. anyone have any idea on how i can double tripple confirm what mobos will fit in my tower? that or just buy a new case w/mobo?

Coligny? no words or nerdy advice?

Have a look here to confirm. Do a bit of measuring to be sure but it is most likely micro ATX. That can actually be a couple of different sizes - typically square or rectangular. The case will probably be able to accommodate both. They usually can, but I like exact equivalents because you just never know what stupid little issue might emerge when fitting non equivalent parts.

That's very unusual. I assume you mean the long 24 pin connector? If the problem is the MB only has 20 pins you can detach 4 of the pins from the connector so it will still fit.

Dell power supplies and cases are usually non standard. In a really bad way... They didn't even came up with their own standard, just use randomly the cheapest junk that can be produced in china...

I can't give much advice because I'm more or less out of the loop. When I build a masheen it's most of the time a server with specs totally unrelated to a user facing hardware. I usually try to avoid video, sound cards as well as keyboards and mouses...

connector is 20 and the socket is 24.. didn't know if i had to put it right in the middle (2 pins on both sides left unconnected) or all the way to the left or right.

yes... fuck Dell. but I got the workstation for free from my Google friend.

I am looking at his now:

get a new tower, mobo, and upgrade to Intel i5 CPU. Need to get RAM still, but this is all only JPY15,000 total and I am set.

Do you mean the connector is 24 and the socket 20? Anyway, the plug and socket are keyed so you can 't put it in the wrong way. Usually 4 pins will detach from the plug by taking off some tape and sliding free. You can then plug into a 20 pin socket.

In any case it looks like you are replacing but you might find the new board is the same.

ok edited my post... plug is 20, socket is 24. when i tried last night, it fit right the middle.

will try again when I get home, but no need as the card is working flawlessly... despite the BSOD when I installed the Catalyst software as I forgot to delete all my gpu drivers and start from scratch.

I ran LoL on the highest graphics and only got minor lag from it. doing 100% fine on Medium. SC2 requires a bit more power... Medium grphics is a bit laggy and really bad when I have a Protoss death ball...

happy so far, but I want more

I have the feeling we are at cross purposes regarding plugs and sockets. In any case.

1. It is keyed so you can't get it wrong.
2. The power supply's connector plug will adapt to 20 pins if necessary by removing 4 pins
3. The extra 4 pins are on the end of the line of pins.

Thanks Wage Slave... I need to get all the dust out of my computer anyway... should do the power supply at the same time.

to be more specific, the cable coming from the power supply is 20, the hole in the motherboard is 24.

So older mother board, newer power supply.

I'm still confused. Version 1 is 20 pin and version 2 is 24 pin. If the power supply is only 20 pin it must be older than the 24 pin motherboard.

It might well be that the extra four pins have been supplied not attached to the 20 on the plug from the power supply wire. You can probably mate them up by sliding them on the end of the plug. They are usually detachable to provide backwards compatibility.

Not me. I wasn't bothered with the inside of computers in those days. Not sure why - I sort forgot all about everything hands on tech for a long time and resurrected an interest in the last 5 years or so. I blame valve radios, 60's/70's HiFi amps and the impossibility of finding a Japanese tech with the first idea for that.

Put it this way... there were two ways the plug could be inserted, only one of which would not be detrimental to the motherboard's health.

Hmmm. Actually those stupid flimsy molex connectors will allow contact to be made the wrong way round even though you can't actually mate the plug and socket. This results in 12V rather than 5V being sent into silicon bits. This can have slightly deleterious and pretty prompt effects on silicon health. Don't ask how I know this - I just do.

OK so I am buying some RAM off a guy on craigslist and I will have to get it posted to me.

What is the best and cheapest way to have it sent?
I am paying JPY1500 2 x 2 GB DDR2 PC2-6400 DIMMs (which is hells of cheap) and I dont want to blow that much more cause I still am getting a new monitor/TV and some other stuffs.

Helps?

You can't use that RAm with that motherboard, its not compatible. You'll get beeps or at best really awful performance and constant problems casue if it does accept it, it'll be badly under-voltage. you need DDR3 for that board.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P7P55D/#specifications

4 x DIMM, Max. 16 GB, DDR3 2200(O.C.)*/1600/1333/1066 Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel memory architecture
Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)
*Hyper DIMM support is subject to the physical characteristics of individual CPUs. Some hyper DIMMs only support one DIMM per channel. Please refer to Memory QVL for details.
**Refer to www.asus.com or this user manual for the Memory QVL(Qualified Vendors Lists).

In fact looking at it, the CPU you got requires you to specifically have two DDR3 1333 sticks installed (though sadly this shit gets complpicated, I have not kept up with it all, and the motherboard may have a memory controller in-built that means you can use the stuff listed above and not jsut the 1333 RAM suggested by the CPU manufacturer. This is probably the reality actually).

If it's DDR2 RAM and a DDR3 board, the only way IPU will get it mounted is with a hammer.
