Just a reminder*, in Japan using or owning a Java-based YouTube downloader" or a "Firefox add-on" to download and save media from YouTube is expressly forbidden by Japan's new Jailtime-for-Downloading Law.
*Keep your software tools and downloads in an encrypted partition
or a removable storage device that's is well hidden from the JASRAÇ jackboots.

Legal downloading of stuff like a Linux ISO using a Bittorrent client is EXPRESSLY illegal according to the (hastily written) new anti-piracy law, which was one of the major complaints the Japanese public made after the law was passed. Japanese authorities now seem to be saying that they will handle legal uses of a Bittorrent client on a "case-by-case basis."
The new law also made watching YouTube illegal or using NTT's HikariTV's built-in DVR illegal, but authorities decided to "reinterpret" the new law so that those illegal uses are magically now legal.

Cool! I have absolutely no idea how I'm going to live for the next couple of years. They can jail me and save me the worry of thinking about how I'm going to make a buck. I wish I'd become a criminal years ago.

European Court: Convictions for File-Sharing Violate Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights has declared that the copyright monopoly stands in direct conflict with fundamental Human Rights, as defined in the European Union and elsewhere. This means that as of today, nobody sharing culture in the EU may be convicted just for breaking the copyright monopoly law; the bar for convicting was raised considerably. This can be expected to have far-reaching implications, not just judicially, but in confirming that the copyright monopoly stands at odds with human rights.

While I know that many of them get around the mosaic by viewing "export versions" of JAV, I had two j-youngin's recently ask me "you actually like porn without mosaic?! How can you watch that stuff?!" They were seriously weirded out by it :eek2: ...all I could manage in response was "you don't have a mosaic you're own dick when you're banging a girl, why would you want a mosaic in your porn?" They shrugged it off as "cultural differences" and how they grew up with mosaic porn.

Yeah, I've heard Japanese people say they preferred mosaic porn because the uncensored stuff is too graphic for them. I countered with why not just watch softcore porn then? That was too difficult of a concept for them to comprehend though.

The whole requiring a mosaic thing is fucking weird. Though I think porn should be legal I kind of get why hardcore porn is illegal in some places. However, allowing it to be sold as long as the genitals are a bit pixelated makes zero fucking sense. Incidentally, videos of women blowing dogs don't require a mosaic.

Check the KIDM series, especially those with Yuria Kamijiyo, it's more cocktease than porn. They play around censorship with light and shadows in a fun way without any mosaic.

Excuse my ignorance about internet laws etc in Japan but it would be good to find out what's going on before I return.

Taro said something about how originally the new laws passed whenever made youtube functions illegal tho it's been reinterpreted since. Does this mean that new law technically makes posting videos from youtube somewhere else like on a forum or blog illegal?

Also what's the deal about watching free content on websites that host free tv show, movie, sports events streaming? I don't download anything but I do go to some websites based in Europe that can give me events that free tv doesn't show. I am not talking about file sharing sites here - just sites that host 'paid tv' like cable programs for free. Will such websites be blocked when I hook up an internet connection in Japan?

Lastly, what's the deal with wifi in Japan? I was very happy when I found out that my old 'apartment' (not really, a horrible one room with the toilet and basin , no real shower and no bath) was located in a place where a strong wifi signal was available thru a hotspot. Believe it or not I didn't pay one shipwon for wifi during my last job in Korea - I just hooked up my laptop to the connection. As long as you have a good security program you can surf the net from those wifi hotspots without damaging your computer. I never hooked up to wifi by disabling my security or firewall tho some people recommend that.

I can't imagine Japan letting anybody surf the net tada. Legally in Korea at the moment, you can access wifi for free if there is a hotspot or somebody's connection is open. If you don't secure your connection then that's your problem. I doubt very much I will be able to have free internet in Japan the same way. :)

The Japanese government has made Youtube "responsible" for copyright violation. You can post any Youtube on this forum legally.

Euro sites like BBC are blocked but many gaijin use a free rerouting service like Hola Unblocker (or pay for a VPN) to watch the BBC.
Hola is especially good if you watch to watch legal streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, which are blocked in Japan. Watching legal streaming services using an unblocker/VPN
Hardcore downloading gaijin use encrypted seedboxes, but that's sort of overkill if a free unblocker like Hola is doing the job.

Free WiFi in Japan is harder to find than in Europe or North America, but it's out there. I have made a mental map of convenient free WiFi places such as Starbucks, train stations, next to electronics shops, etc. If I was in an office every day, I would get a pocket WiFi router (around 4000yen/m).

I wonder if this only applies to Japanese music that infringes on domestic copyrights, hence the action by JASRAC.
