Unexpected pop up

Postby chibaka » Mon Jun 01, 2015 5:46 pm

Suddenly a message icon appeared on the toolbar of my win 7 laptop, looks like Microshaft are keeping their word...
When I clicked..

There are people who question the value of 10 if you are happily running 7. Running 8, and those doubts are not so strong.

Probably will upgrade, I tried a win 10 preview version already, much better than the car crash 8/8.1.

You probably would have lined up if Vista had been offered for free too.

You have a year from the as yet unannounced release date to upgrade for free, and I think you have more to gain by waiting and seeing how it shakes out, rather than being the one who has to come across all the problems without a way to revert to Win7.

I have a computer on dual boot which I keep Win7 for certain peripheral hardware which does not play nice with alternatives. I am yet to be aware of any compelling reason to change just because Microsoft would like me to. I am very aware that Microsoft are making this offer for their convenience, not for mine.

And on that note:

Is it better than Win7 in your view?

Too early to say, it's still in development so there are a few minor issues. But I found nothing wrong with XP......

Wags, totally understand but with 4 PCs, I can risk one of them to test it out...besides, seems like reporting on OS's is always skewed. I still have no problems with win 8, just annoyed at the design when used on a desktop.

it's just a reservation anyway. when available you still are perfectly free to choose when or if you install it...

(the "* YESS!!! FREE.." wording at the bottom was creepy though...)

We will see. It's popped up on one of my computers but not the others. May as well reserve it I suppose. Running Windows 7 except for one laptop which languishes with Vista. I too couldn't see any improvement over XP except for minor prettiness, which has mostly been disabled for better speed.

Well then, you are possibly best trying out your freebie 10 upgrade on your desktop with 8 installed, rather than sacrificing the 7, about which you hear less people moaning about the user interface.

Seeing Chibaka's ambivalence about whether 10 is better than 7, I still don't understand when he says "I will probably upgrade because it is better than 8." Whether 8 is a dog's breakfast or not (and Choko, if you read the media reports carefully the feeling is that 8 is a reliable and improved OS sabotaged by a crap user interface if you don't have touch, with parts of that sabotage being removal of useful features people appreciated in 7 but can not get in later OSes) is irrelevant to Chibaka's decision, because all he is being offered is continued 7 or free 10. And that choice is not cut and dried.

But hey, if you want to be a guinea pig, if you can't bear to wait a few seasons, then go ahead. Just don't be surprised when you end up on a Peruvian dinner plate.

One thing though...

Traditionnally clean install are better than os upgrade...

At worse, clean reinstall 7 then straight upgrade to 10...

Also... Install inside a virtual masheen can tell you if you like the interface or not...

I mean 10 "seems" like an upgrade over 7, whereas 8/8.1 was a complete and utter disaster. Of course the imminent "win 7 support ends soon" announcement looms.

That's why my least used PC gets it first. That being said, I agree with Coligny's sentiment...clean wipe then install. (win8 "upgrades" did allow this)

Just because someone has new hardware doesn't automatically mean a new operating system is needed or wanted. In a way, Microsoft really have been going sideways at best since XP when it comes to operating systems. I'm not sure that Office is that much better either. Not for the things I do anyway.

I am sure Office has actually become worse in the last 5 years or so.

Everything is much harder to find. Really, why did they need that new layout?

And I can't do with Powerpoint what I could with the older versions.

Microsoft explains what you’ll lose by upgrading to Windows 10

Firstly there are the software losses. Most of these will only affect a small number of users, but upgrading will mean saying goodbye to Windows Media Center, the card game Hearts, and Windows 7's desktop gadgets. Anyone in the habit of using floppy disks on Windows will also have to install new drivers, and Microsoft warns that watching DVDs will also require "separate playback software." Microsoft manager Gabriel Aul has said on Twitter that a DVD option for Windows 10 is coming "later this year," but early upgraders can always download VLC instead.

In addition to the software losses, there are also a number of limitations for some of Windows 10's most exciting features. Cortana will only be available in the US, UK, China, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain at launch, while Windows Hello (which offers support for various biometric passwords) will need an infrared camera for facial recognition, or a supported fingerprint reader. The Xbox Music and Xbox Video streaming apps will also be constrained by the usual, complex web of region-based licenses.

More annoyingly, perhaps, Microsoft has also changed how updates will work with Windows 10. Although the Pro and Enterprise editions will both be able to defer updates, Windows 10 Home users will not have the option. Updates will instead be downloaded and installed automatically as soon as they're available.

Too late: the nagware will already be on your system.

I haven't launched my Win7 yet this month, but apparently, even if you have set windows updates to critical security-based updates only, this notification in included. My knickers aren't even slightly skewed, but it does raise questions as to Microsoft's bona fides in classifying a nagging advertisement about a promotion they are doing, as an update critical to the security of your system.

If you search, there is information about how to block the notification from your taskbar. You may need to search Google for it though: I'm not sure that I would trust a Bing search for that.

OK, gotcha. Although, if he installs Win10, he has already drunk the koolaid, and always being at the bleeding edge will be coolio :cool2:

Microsoft have uploaded fucked updates in the past. There is likely to be even more fun when they automatically roll out updates for people who have not followed Coligny's advice and have failed to do the update after a clean install: there is going to be a trainwreck of older hardware and legacy programs to trip Microsoft up, and one or two "my computer won't boot this morning all of a sudden," I am sure. But then, that is just me. i don't like the Google Chrome constant secret update model.

Also called "tuesday" with microsoft... Rule of thumb... Usually wait for 1-2 weeks before applying any newly published update so enough people paid the price if the update is a clusterfuck...

I mindlessly turned auto update on for a CenOS server because if not I never think aboot it...
Well... It still work... But half fubared by a bad dependency... Ideally linux distro should offer auto update for x week old patches only... To be sure that it's all good...

Windows 10: After the free upgrade, you can perform a clean install if needed

If you have a Windows 7 or 8 PC on July 29th, you will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. This free license will only be offered for one year, but what happens if you need to reinstall your OS? The good news is that the license Microsoft is providing will allow you to clean install Windows 10 on the same device at any time.

For me, I just want to learn the new OS before it spreads. (hence me being fine with only 1 pc with it) The only time the bleeding edge was my goal was when the first gen smart phones came out here...because even then they weren't really powerful enough to handle the android OS, let alone features like carrier mail. Nowadays, I can wait til the current phone gets beat, the battery goes jiji, or there's some sort of major leap.

No argument here, just saying it's a separate (although very related issue) of QC... not releasing updates out into the wild before they're properly tested/screened/etc. If they did that, the average punter that knows zero about PC's would benefit from the auto updates. Don't tell me you haven't seen tons of Japanese still using win95, with tons of unneeded crap, zero updates, still trying to install drivers via CD...even floppy, that don't work because they haven't installed any of the OS or driver updates. When the case eventually fills with dust and shorts and those guys eventually buy a new PC, auto updates are exactly what they need.

The free updater ? Or the license right to use windows 10 ?

Software as service !? Sooo... After one year ? You pay a subscription ?

Wage slave has the right of it...you have a year to use the updater. After that, no free update. If you update within that year for free, the license is good forevar!!
