PSP Web Browser

Postby Big Booger » Sun Mar 27, 2005 4:37 pm

A little precursor:
I was not the first person to successfully do this, nor do I claim to be. I am on the other hand one of the only ones willing to share everything I know. This is why this page is here. The more people we have working on things like this the quicker we can reach our goal (homebrew). Every little bit helps...right?

Summary:

As far as I can figure out, its NOT part of the firmware...But this can be made into a general purpose browser if you create a portal-like site to jumps to links. When you select "Go to home page" it returns you to the portal site (index.html). So thats an easy way out.

Yes you can use input (we googled stuff), when you enter a textbox and press X the PSP pops up the Keyboard API (remember there's alot of API to be taken advantage of with the PSP). After that its as simple as any other input on the PSP.

I know they're not, I'm just wondering if I can access the web via the PSP in my own home or at work where I know there are wireless points.

Not yet.

This hack was done by redirecting the in-game browser in Wipeout Pure to go to a different page instead of the "downloadable content" one for the game. While the browser does exist, it's not a standalone application you can use for regular web browsing.

But this does hint of interesting things to come. :)

Cool! I might actually purchase one of these babies this weekend, depending on my cashflow.

PSP to have full-on net access - first in Korea?!?

According to sources in Korea, Sony Computer Entertainment will launch its PlayStation Portable, or PSP, in that country on May 2. Unlike the Japan and North America markets, the first shipment of the handheld will come with Internet features ready for use. Sony is partnering with KT Corp., a major wireless Internet service provider in Korea, to offer easy online connectivity and other services.

The first 100,000 units sold of the Korean PSP Value Pack will come with a Network Utility UMD and a limited-time membership for wireless Internet service, in addition to a UMD movie of Spider-Man 2.

By tapping the Network Utility UMD functionality, gamers in Korea will be able to enjoy a number of other online services in addition to games, including Web browsing, an online movie player, and an online music player.

It makes sense. KT's Nespot service is phenomenal (and one of the few things I miss about Korea). Hotspots everywhere and if you have a Nespot account (about 500 yen a month) you can use any of them 24/7. While the functionality would be welcome in Japan, there just aren't the hotspots around to take advantage of it.

Re: PSP Web Browser

If the tards in Sony didn't cripple the WiFi browser in the PlayStation Portable this wouldn't have happened.-

The Despite the hype, Sony PSP no sellout in debut
Seattle Times: Business & Technology: Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 12:00am
....some retailers said yesterday they were surprised at relatively lackluster interest on launch day and still have PSPs sitting on store shelves.
Internet message boards over the weekend were dotted with comments from gamers around the country reporting similar stockpiles.
Greg Peterman, a store manager for a Super Target in Dallas, said he had expected gamers to line up Thursday before the doors opened.
"We weren't hit like that," he said. "We thought we were going to be. But it didn't really happen."
<snip>
The price may have dampened casual gamers' enthusiasm.
At $250, the PSP is $100 more expensive than Nintendo's new handheld, the DS, and some gamers had to pay even more to get one.
Austin, Texas, resident Paul Branson said he purchased a PSP on launch day from a Fry's Electronics store. But he couldn't buy the PSP unless he bought a "bundle" that included two games, as well.
"I was thinking $249 plus tax, and when I walked out of there, it was $368," Branson said."
<snip>
"I would expect, though, as the early adopters now have them and are showing them off and people are seeing it, that it will have traction," DeMatteo said.

Well, I wound up purchasing one of these bad boys, and let me tell you, Lumines is nothing short of spectacular. The video looks great on it too. However, the lack of other people buying it cripples the wireless support, and Kai (a tool to play PSP and other consoles multiplayer online) doesn't fully support the only game I purchased. On top of this, the pixel problem is *not* an overestimation, as mine came with a few dead pixels off the bat. Some of these fixed themselves, but still others died. This thing is fantastic, cool looking, and has great games, but there is just not enough people to warrant buying one if you're interested in multiplayer, and the pixel problem is pretty fucking annoying too.

Overall, I'm really actually happy to have this thing, but I am still waiting for some full fledged web software to come out, and new games too, plus maybe something that will handle the LEAP protocol for wireless authentication, too. That would be great.

maybe no ones buying it cos handheld gamers tend to realise that a handheld game needs more than pretty pictures to be worth playing? and a handheld toy shouldnt encourage anal screen worry, but to just pick up and play..

Thanks for the PSP connect website. That is cool to be able to download videos direct.

I bought my PSP in Japan in January, and have waited for things to heat up here. Despite what that article said, it is sold out EVERYWHERE in the city I live. I agree with the problem: most people just haven't SEEN it for themselves. Looking at the commercials it is hard to believe that it is real gameplay, that beautiful, but it is. In Japan I noticed sample units everywhere, so people could try out games, but no such luck here. I think they want to SELL every unit, and not waste them on samples.

Personally I think it's a great device. I use it to play games (Lumines and Minna no Golf are it for now) and also as a MP3 player, and hopefully more as a video player. My goal is to get videos my toddler enjoys downloaded, so I can have 6 hours (at least) of something to occupy him on those long flights to Japan without plunking down 400 dollars for a one-region DVD player that weighs 5 pounds and only has a 3 hour battery life...

Let me know if you find any other PSP video post websites. Here is one video converter I found...

Tokyo and Osaka Subway Maps for PSP:

You could always just snap a picture of the printed maps available at most subway stations yourself - but thats far too much work!

After the flap the MTA made about the guy hosting a jpg of the New York subway map, it seems everybody wants to put the maps online. Engadget has a bit up where they're asking for links to various maps.

They've got the link to the Tokyo map you posted, so I put the JR East one up on Flickr and linked it as well. :D
