PlayStation 2 sales hurt Sony profit

Postby Big Booger » Fri Oct 24, 2003 1:32 pm

Electronics maker and entertainment company Sony Corp has reported a 25 percent drop in quarterly profit, on slack sales of its PlayStation 2 game console and slumping demand for its audiovisual products.

Sony's fall in quarterly profit stands in stark contrast to the improving results elsewhere in Asia's consumer electronics sector.

FULL STORY

I wonder if the Xbox and Gamecube had anything to do with this? Also, this bear of a worldwide economy surely didn't have an effect on the sales of their console platform.

Maybe that revamped albeit more expensive release of the PS2 Tivo might boost sales.. though I doubt it.

Maybe everybody has a playstation 2 and there is no need to buy any more. I wonder if sony ever heard of the concept of market saturation.

I did not study finance but, I cant stand the use of project profits especialy for the average person(who is likley to loos his job.)

The accountants will project a profit for the year on year average, and consider things like growth and other thrends. When the PS2 was released they will perdict say 100,000 sales but ther get 125,000 sales the the first year so 25% increase in profits(I know its not exactly as basic as that and there are other factors such as the cost of production will decrease and artifical pricing bla bla bla). So for the next year sony will adjust their figures so 100% profit = selling 125,000 consoles, so every time you hear sony getting an increase of profits they selling much more consoles after for year they will be expecting to sell 244140. SO they base their profits on this kind of thrend. when we here that sony is down on profits. they are actualy still making huge profits compared to the original 100,000 just they are not making the profits that follow the groth thrend. and as the growth thrend is in essence growing. they may of sold 100% of their last years, just not the extra 25% growth. they are absoutly not operating at a loss.

What really gets to me is when you will hear large corperations firing thousands of people becasue they want to streamline. Or piracy is hitting us badly we have to cut some jobs to meet the projected profits.

There really are no good new games at the moment. GameCube sales are a joke and X-Box is dead in Japan. Perhaps if something new and good were to come out sales would pick up. I plan on RockMan Collection for PS2 when the time comes. That is when I will buy a PS2.

hmm.. can I bring my PS2 to Japan? Will I have any issue with customs?

You should have no problem at all it is a personal electronics item. I brought my whole desktop through customs and when they asked me if I had anything to declair I said NO.

IF you do bring your ps you may have to buy a transformer.

If you plan on playing japanese games. you should chip your playstation 2 while you are at home. Chipping here is very much frowned upon. I want to buy a Japanese Limited PS2 (just for the sake of it lol) But I want to get it chipped, All of the places I asked they said no. Perhaps I am not going far enough into the rabbit hole.

The rabbit hole you seek is called South Korea. PS2 chipped, while you wait for only 4500 yen. Bootleg games run 700 to 1500 yen, depending on whether they're on a CDR or DVDR

Sony's turnaround strategy (found over at The Magic Box):

- Sony announced they will cut 20,000 jobs worldwide this year, 7000 jobs will be eliminated in Japan. In addition, Sony announced they will cooperate with Samsung to establish a new LCD screen technology joint venture in South Korea in 2004.

The sick ( :bukkake: ) bastards. They only lost 25% profit. that means they made at least 75% expected profit with trends included. they could even of made more than the same time last year. I need to get a hold of their last 10 years finantial year boods and do some calculating. Futhur they are out sourcing jobs to korea undoubtitly with cheaper mass labor.

I think I should invest money in sony now, this time next year I bet you will hear of a masive turnover.

Actualy if you are into investing google have anounced that they are seriously thinking about floating. I will be sure to buy some shares I have been checking google everyday. The last time I made a perdiction (tom.com) on the day it opened it made a 400% jump in price. I didnt book any shares and I couldnt get to buy any. Its going to be difficult with google I dont have a credit card or an american bank account and I dont know what to say to a Japanese finance broker.
