but it is about 75% smaller in volume than the original PS2, is just 2.8 cm thick (the original is 7.8 cm thick), and comes with a built-in Ethernet port for networked gaming. Hits stores on November 1st in Europe and North America, with Japan following (once again, what is this craziness?) two days later.
I don't know where these photos are coming from, and if I hadn't seen the PDF on sony's site, I would have dissmissed them as really good looking fakes....but the specs in the PDF look like they fit what's in the photos. The PDF says it only 23% smaller than the older model (if I am reading it right) but its weight is only 900 grams (that's about 2 lbs)
There is a PDF file on Sony's Japan site with the specs (this new version is going by model number SCPH-70000 CB for those at home keeping score) but I didn't find any pictures.

It looks almost too thin....Obviously no room for the current optional hard drive -although I imagine that Sony could release some sort of USB HD in the future ....and I would guess that fan noise must be pretty low now (if it even has a fan now, since this looks like it might be thin enough for radiant heat dissipation. One of the photos one engadget shows that has a top pop up drive lid (like the original playstation).

is listing the Japan version of this new slimed down PS2 at $30 US less than the current Japan version ($199 US for the new, $229 US for the current model). Possible looming PS2 price cut for the Japan Market? I'm sure more news will fall out as the TGS looms closer at the end of the week.
