"Crayon Shin-chan" Man Goes Missing

Yoshito Usui, who writes the best-selling "Crayon Shin-chan" series, has apparently gone missing. He was last seen on the 11th and his family have now asked Saitama police for help who, in turn, have alerted other prefectural forces. None of the news reports have any information about why the 51 year old might have disappeared, or whether he might have done it before, but they say that his family has repeatedly tried to contact him to no avail.

Replace Usui Yoshito with Sakai NoriP (RariP) and you got yourself the same news from last month.

Both were also heavily involved in anime from the early 90's. Strange coincidence.

Maybe he came to realize that he created the worse thing on television and decided to disappear, but I doubt that.

Are you kidding? It's one of the best things on (Japanese) TV.

Anyway, maybe he's one of those empty spots on the NoriP flow chart and is worried about being implicated by her or more likely her loser douche bag of a husband.

His family say he would sometimes go off hillwalking and had recently set off for mountains in Gunma before they lost contact with him.

"Crayon Shin-chan" is a turd of a program that made Beavis and Butthead look like meta-philosophic studies.

Seriously, who cares? He is missing.. so what? It's not like he is 4 and needs to be taken care of every ass wiping along. Maybe he is taking the time off away from his ugly J-wife that don't put out but screwing other men and away from his whiny little kids that do nothing but eat up his income, time, and resources.

Shit, I do it all the time (go off the radar) and I'm not even married.

True or not, it's reported he said he was only going away for a day. If he really has gone missing in the mountains rather than done a bunk then his family might be regretting not calling in help earlier.

Netizens think that Usui and his wife are Jehovah's witnesses which has caused some friction with his family and neigbours.

Body found in mountain may be missing 'Crayon Shinchan' cartoonist
Japan, Sept. 19 (AP) - (Kyodo)--A climber found a body, which may be that of Yoshito Usui, cartoonist of the popular "Crayon Shinchan" series adapted for TV and film, in a mountain straddling Gunma and Nagano prefectures on Saturday morning, police said.
The body will be recovered from the bottom of a steep cliff on Mt. Arafune on Sunday to verify whether it is indeed Usui, 51, who has been missing since Sept. 11...more..

What do you mean by "may be..."

OR, do Japanese people have a hard time identifying their own people too?

From the Asahi:

The publisher of "Crayon Shin-chan" on Monday expressed its regret over the death of Yoshito Usui, the creator of the popular manga series. The cartoonist's body was found on Mount Arafune in Gunma Prefecture over the weekend. He is believed to have died in a fall. A spokesman for Futabasha Publishers Ltd. read a short statement at a news conference in Tokyo. "We regret his passing," it said. "There is nothing more we can say."

Usui, 51, went missing on Sept. 11 after telling his family he was going hiking. A digital camera retrieved near the body contained pictures Usui apparently took of scenery on his way up the mountain, the publisher said. The last picture was one looking down from Tomoiwa cliff. His body was found about 120 meters below the top of the cliff. The "Crayon Shin-chan" series has been published for 19 years. A total of 50 million comic books were sold, the publisher said. Volume No. 49, the latest in the series, came out in July.

The unstated conjecture is now stated:

Yomiuri: Cartoonist may have slipped taking photo, fallen to death
Yoshito Usui, the "Crayon Shin-chan" cartoonist whose body was found on Mt. Arafune in Gunma Prefecture on Saturday, may have slipped from a rock face while taking a photograph, according to the publisher of the work. Futabasha Publishers Ltd. held a press conference in Tokyo on Monday--the day after the body was confirmed as being that of the manga artist. A spokesman said Usui's digital camera, which was found near his body, contained photographs taken from the Tomoiwa rock face from which he is believed to have fallen. "Perhaps his foot slipped at the moment he took a photograph from the rock face," the spokesman said, adding that the photograph in question was the last of about 30 that Usui took during his hike. The detached strap of the camera was wrapped around Usui's wrist when he was found, according to a senior editor to whom the police showed the photographs. The camera, which was still on, may have been torn from the strap when Usui fell. Usui was said to have an inquisitive nature and often took photographs, including shots on which he based his drawings...more...
