okay i stayed here. the decor was as you see it, etc. it was pretty nice; the japan town is actually nothing more than a few linked stripmalls, which was sort of sad. the attached bar/restaurant was decent, but overly pricey for what it is.
the deal here is that for its location one is probably good staying here for the rates (it cost me US$130 a night) rather than anything else.
the gym sucked.

That is pricey. Last time I was in SF, I stayed at the St. Francis Hotel for a special weekend rate, $130 per night, stay two days and get a free third day. That took the price to about $87 per day. You can get used to the luxuries of a world class hotel after just 2 or 3 days, especially at that price.

Wow, that's a great deal, especially in San Francisco.

Yeah the Nihonmachi is very small in San Francisco, not much to write home about...even the de facto "Little Tokyo" which has sprouted up in the East Village over the last several years is more interesting...but the hotel looks cool though.

the "little tokyo" here in the East Village is rapidly tranforming into "little osaka" as sushi places are being replaced with more sauce-based and egg/noodles/rice dishes (not that osaka doesn't have sushi, too.)

i thought $130 a night was a decent deal, myself, compared to the usual $350-400 when I'm put up in cities (efforts to get the cash difference re me staying in cheaper places have failed.)

Is it being populated with lots of okonomiyaki joints and takoyaki stands as well? :)

mostly okonomiyaki joints (and tons of chicken gizzard places too) thought at present there's still only the one (afaik) real takoyaki stand on 9th st.

I was tempted to stay another 2 days and get another day free. They offered it. Must have been off-season rates, I think it was in February, the hotel was pretty empty. But even off season, that was a hell of a deal.

The LES doesn't really exist anymore. I miss the real NY.

well that entire area has been gentrified along with Alphabet city, and the East Village....blame it on the money and real estate developers.

I haven't lived there for a while but I can appreciate your angst, I'm sure it's changed based on what I've read and what I've heard from people who live there.

Your sentiment seems to be echoed by chef/author Anthony Bourdain, at least as it was represented in his Travel Show No Reservations episode covering New York City, his hometown.

And she claims Japanese heredity? Must be something that occurs during the odd season of the four......Take, will you claim her for the Chrysanthemum crowd?
